About this deal

Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers. The poem is based on a real-life tradition. Each year, for the last 70 years, the Mayor of Oslo in Norway has given a Christmas tree to the people of Britain as a thank you for their support during WWII. The tree is a symbol of peace and friendship between the two countries. Every year, a poet is asked to write a poem to welcome the tree. This book contains the poem that Julia Donaldson wrote for the 2020 Christmas tree. Fir trees have individual flat needled leaves that are attached to the stem. The needles grow in a spiral on the tip and lay flat, and this kind of display gives fir trees their full look. The trees are often bushy and look full. This poem was commissioned to decorate the annual Trafalgar Square Christmas tree, with banner artwork by Marcus Walters, as part of The Poetry Society's annual Look North More Often programme.

Seven of Julia Donaldson’s books have been turned into award-winning animated films shown on the BBC, and her work is widely adapted for children’s theatre in the UK and abroad. She is also famous for her theatrical performances based on her books which she has performed with music and song in the theatre, at literary festivals and other events. Julia, together with her husband Malcolm, founded their own theatre company to perform two medleys of her work at the Edinburgh Fringe and other venues. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. This little tree is actually a very important tree – one day it will become the huge Christmas tree which is displayed in Trafalgar Square in London. We follow the tree as it grows then is cut down, and taken to its new home in England, where it is decorated and enjoyed by thousands of people. Pine cones in all shapes and sizes can be used to make characterful Christmas decor ideas for children, or more elegant designs to fill your home with holiday spirit. In 2011 Julia was appointed the UK’s Children's Laureate. During her laureateship she undertook a tour of libraries from John O'Groats to Lands’ End to publicise the state of libraries in the UK.

Note: The tree in Trafalgar Square is a magnificent Norwegian Spruce (Picea abies) so not botanically a pine tree (Pinaceae family). Julia Donaldson knows that the tree in Trafalgar Square is a Norwegian Spruce. When she was composing the poem, she chose to use a word that’s more generic and which she found more poetic. Although, there are over a hundred different types of pine depending on the region, the most popular types of pine include:

Different tree varieties offer different silhouettes. Some trees will offer denser foliage, or a fuller shape than others. You'll also need to consider the footprint of the tree variety and think about the space you have available. The European Fir, for example, is much wider at the bottom and tapers towards the top of the tree.' Displaying pine cones in tall glass votives is a wonderful Christmas styling idea for bringing height to displays on sideboards or for use on mantelpiece decor ideas, and by spraying them you can easily tie them in with the rest of your Christmas decor ideas. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading. The 7.5ft Symons Tree is around 4ft wide, so feels very voluminous, and again, the key to a good-looking faux tree is in the detail: this tree has over 1,754 tips to give a full, bushy effect, which have been hand-painted in a natural shade of green to ensure the most realistic finish. Water the Phalaenopsis orchids, let them drain, then place them in your container. Use moss to fill in any gaps. Pines can be distinguished by their bundled leaves. The needled leaves are often found in bundles of three to five together on a branch. Pines usually have fewer branches so it doesn’t seem as full or heavy as other trees.

Spray twigs with eco-friendly gold paint and insert the twigs through the moss, between the orchids.

Now that we know that all Christmas trees don’t resemble each other, there is often an easy way to tell pines apart from fir and spruce. Although, they are all needled evergreens, they are quite different from each other.
