About this deal

Gently deflate the dough, and transfer it to a lightly greased work surface. Divide it into 12 pieces. My recipe includes only 2 ingredients + coconut coating. But there are so many ways to customize these date balls to make them work for you. Preheat oven to 350F or 180C. When the rolls have risen, pour the coconut mixture all over the tops of the rolls. Tilt the pan around so the coconut sauce gets to every side and corner of the pan.

Allsorts Liquorice Favourites - A random mix of Coconut Rolls and Liquorice Cuttings - Allsorts Factory Misshapes x Weigh Out Bag Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl, and allow the dough to rise, at room temperature, until it's nearly doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Rising may take longer, especially if you've kneaded by hand. Give it enough time to become quite puffy. Use brown sugar in the filling for extra flavor. It will complement the nutmeg and add a comforting caramelized flavor to the rolls while contrasting well with the tropical coconut flavors. Traditionally Salara is made with freshly grated dry coconut—desiccated coconut. This however takes a lot of effort and patience. A specific grater is also needed to grate the coconut. Thankfully, using store-bought sweetened coconut flakes is a great substitute. You can use it as is or pulse it in a food processor to make it more fine and similar to the freshly grated option. The dough recipe uses instant dry yeast. Unlike active dry yeast, with instant yeast, there is no need to dissolve the yeast in warm milk or liquid and let it froth before using (which can take up to 15 minutes if using active yeast). You may skip on the cream cheese for the topping but the glaze won’t be as creamy. Actually, this ingredient is not used in the traditional Brazilian recipe. Try with and also without and see which one works best for you. I prefer mine with cream cheese! If you use a ring pan to bake them, each individually will still look like a coconut roll although the whole will look like a round wreath, similar to a roscón/ rosca de reyes (Three King’s cake) although the toppings are different. Bake in a preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes at 390° F (200° C) if the dough is from scratch or at 350° F (180° C) if the dough is pre-made. Cover loosely with a sheet of aluminum foil for the last 15 minutes, especially if the dough is homemade. You don’t want them to brown too much on top. They are ready when puffy and golden brown! SEE PIC. 3 Coconut: The shredded coconut on the outside of the coconut date balls are a signature look for these energy date balls. Coconut is high in antioxidants so it’s good for fighting disease. But it’s also high in saturated-fats, so just be mindful of how much you use. How do you make coconut date balls Fortunately this time, I won't have to close my eyes to remember the marvelous aroma of this favorite treat of mine. I can experience it in my own kitchen!

Add coconut milk and stir until the glaze is smooth. This glaze will crust, so it is important not to make it too much in advance. Then prepare the filling: Mix the coconut, condensed milk, vanilla, and nutmeg together in a medium bowl. Reserve!

Forget the candies... What I wanted were these sweet rolls!!! 🙂 I loved getting there in the afternoon, just when one of the batches was leaving the oven, warm and aromatic as only the most wonderful treats can be... If the mixture is too wet and gooey, then add oats, almond meal or protein powder. It helps to throw those dry ingredients in the food processor to help the mixture set well. Any kind of milk and fat can work for the dough. I’m using dairy butter, but coconut oil, coconut milk, almond milk and vegan butters can be used measure for measure in its place (a 1:1 ration works best). Using a dough hook, mix until the dough until it comes away from the sides of the mixing bowl. This should take around 10 - 15 minutes. The dough should feel smooth and stretchy.

In a jug, add the water and heat in the microwave at 30 second intervals until it is warm to touch. Then add the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar from the dough ingredients. Give it a stir and let stand for 5 - 10 minutes until frothy. Depending on the diet you follow, you may find similar recipes for coconut flour rolls which are often keto, or for coconut date rolls, made with Medjool dates and a hit among vegans.Coconut milk (43%), Tapioca starch, Coconut syrup, Rice flour, Taro (root vegetable - used to help hold the rolls together), Egg. In addition, do not confuse our coconut bread rolls with the Samoan Pani Popo which is smaller, less sweet, and has no filling. It looks like more a sweet bun than a roll.
