Castle Deverill, cherished home to the Deverill family in the west of Ireland for hundreds of years, has burned to the ground. But young and flighty Celia Deverill is determined to restore the sad ruin to its former glory. Celia married well and has the wealth to keep it in the family... and she cannot bear to see her beloved home stand neglected.

Daughters of Castle Deverill | Book by Santa Montefiore

This is Santa Montefiore at her best - an enchanting read overflowing with deliciously poignant moments. If you love a heartfelt, epic trilogy this is for you. I loved it and can't wait for more' -- Dinah Jefferies, author of The Tea Planter's Wife, on Songs of Love and War Sometimes second books can stand alone–this one, however, cannot. And there is no indication on the cover that this is part of a trilogy, so I have a feeling a lot of readers are going to end up confused like I was. Once I got into the book and kind of figured out what was going on, it was fine. The story started moving, and the pieces started making sense together–I still felt like I was playing catch up the whole time, though. Meet Me Under the Ombu Tree is the unforgettable, evocative, and moving tale of forgiveness and love. It follows the lives of the Solanas family living in the tumultuous years of political turmoil in Argentina. Sofia Solanas is the lead character, a proud, resourceful, wilful, spoilt daughter of Argentine nobility. She lives on an expansive ranch and has been brought up under the spiritual practices of the gauchos, and the time-honored traditions of her highborn parents. Everybody seems to love Sofia except for Anna, her Irish mother who visits her sense of inadequacy and alienation on her daughter. When Sofia gets into a steamy love affair that her mother believes would disgrace the family if it ever came out, she banishes Sofia to Europe. By sending her away, she inadvertently exiles the daughter not only from her soul mate for over a decade but also from her family.

Daughters of Castle Deverill: The Deverill Chronicles, Book 2 Daughters of Castle Deverill: The Deverill Chronicles, Book 2

The Daughters of Castle Deverill is the perfect weekend read, it truly is pure escapism. The sweeping nature of the novel and the grandness in scale, makes it a wonderful romantic saga to get lost in. I have read a number of Santa Montefiore books in the past and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. I do like the direction Montefiore has taken with her Deverill series. She has seeped her series deep in rich Irish history, she delivers a strong sense of place and presents the reader with a rich cast of main, as well as supporting characters. I was sorry to reach the end of The Daughters of Castle Deverill, as I now have to wait for the third and final chapter in the series. I am hoping the open ending and unanswered questions that I had after closing the second book will be resolved by Montefiore in the next book. The prose is polished and rich. The characters are flawed, driven, eccentric, and alluring. And the exceptionally compelling, well-paced plot is filled with familial dynamics, drama, emotion, self-discovery, secrets, revelations, love, loss, heartbreak, courage, duty, and passion all surrounded by authentic historical events of the time. It is 1925 and the war is long over. But much has been lost and life will never truly be the same again.

It is 1925 and Castle Deverill has burned to the ground. War and deception have divided the daughters of Ireland, but Celia vows to return her ancestral home to its former glory. Kitty raises a young family but longs for something more, and Bridie flourishes as a New York socialite consumed by revenge. Celia works to reunite her childhood friends and restore the place they once called home, but soon everything she knows is cast into doubt as the Great Depression looms.
