Description

The Lenovo Legion Tower 5i we reviewed late last year had the same CPU and scored nearly as high as the XPS 8940 Special Edition in Geekbench 5, though the XPS consistently squeezed out 50-60 more points in our tests. It's not blowing the Legion Tower 5i out of the water, but a consistent lead is a consistent lead. The Random Access Memory or RAM is the super-fast and temporary storage used to handle all active tasks, apps, and games that will go away when your PC turns off. The more memory your PC has, the better multitasking your PC can handle without having to reload data from slower permanent storage that includes the hard disk drive or solid-state drive.

Now let’s put the XPS Desktop Special Edition on the test bench. I pitted it against the following towers for our benchmarking comparisons. Dell’s use of proprietary components may limit this rig’s appeal among enthusiasts. The tower’s compact 19-liter size also means that Dell went with a custom motherboard, so upgrades (aside from the RAM and storage) could be more difficult down the road as the system ages. The Dell XPS 8940 comes with ten USB ports in total. Having more USB ports is always better, but also pay attention to the version of those USB ports. Higher version ports support faster transfer speeds. It is nice to see that the model has a USB 3.1 port. This interface is using 10Gb/s connection and it's very useful when you transfer big files to external drives. Video ports Performance headroom: The XPS Desktop PSU options allow for better performance upgrades during the life of your system. The 360W PSU supports a 65W processor plus up to 150W graphics.Power for everything you do: Stay in the flow with 11th Gen Intel ® Core™ processor-powered XPS desktop that handles your creative projects with ease, like editing photos and videos, so they're ready to share in a flash. Immerse yourself in your favorite show, the latest popular game, or a new creative project – and never think twice about your PC's ability to keep up. Designed with you in mind, 11th Gen Intel ® Core™ desktop processors give you the performance you've always wanted, for everything you do. The Dell XPS 8940 supports Gen10 Intel Core technology. Intel released its 10th generation of Intel Core processors in 2019. This update is more significant to the company's lineup than previous generations. This is because the 10th generation is using 10nm manufacturing process. The new technology brings more energy efficient CPUs which is especially important for mobile devices.

Your command center: Connect all your devices in a snap with 10 total USB ports, including four front facing ports for easy access. The HDMI and DisplayPort video outputs on the motherboard are disabled on this unit since it has a dedicated graphics card, a GeForce RTX 3070 with one HDMI and three DisplayPort video outputs. We use the built-in 1080p benchmarks in Far Cry 5 (at its Normal and Ultra presets) and Rise of the Tomb Raider (at its Medium and Very High presets). Far Cry 5 uses DirectX 11, while we flip Rise of the Tomb Raider to DirectX 12. IDC Whitepaper “Optimizing Performance with Frequent Server Replacements for Enterprises” commissioned by Dell Technologies and Intel, March 2021. Results are based on interviews with 18 IT practitioners and decision makers at midsize and large enterprises and a web survey of 707 IT practitioners and decision makers at midsize and larger enterprises using Dell Technologies server solutions across 7 industries. See full whitepaper: https://www.delltechnologies.com/resources/en-us/asset/white-papers/products/servers/server-infrastructure-resiliency-enterprise-whitepaper.pdf For Dell XPS 8950 Desktop, you have options to configure it with a 125W 12th Generation Intel Alder Lake 10-core Intel Core i5-12600K up to a 125W 16-core Intel Core i9-12900K with a boost speed up to 5.20 GHz.

Their latest. Our greatest.

The XPS Desktop Special Edition was predictably behind the Corsair and HP towers. However, it matched the MSI and its GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with its GeForce RTX 3070. The latter is an excellent all-around performer for any kind of gaming. Our first test is UL’s PCMark 10, a general system performance assessment for real-world productivity and content-creation scenarios. I excluded the chart since several of the other test systems didn’t complete the test, but the XPS Desktop Special Edition did, with an excellent score of 7,106 points. Informally, we look for at least 4,000 points in that test for high-performance PCs.(See more about how we test desktops.) The DisplayPort (DP) is the most widely used digital interface for transmitting digital video and audio between display devices and PCs. It is good to see that the Dell XPS 8940 is featuring a DisplayPort 1.4. The post version is important if you target higher resolutions with high refresh rate. Although, ver. 1.2 is completely fine for most users, if possible, aim for the higher versions DisplayPort.
