Wolfstone nodded. “But you fear she is not lying about the Graygem’s location. It is in Thorbardin.” I have received troubling information that I need you to investigate. You saw the human woman in company with the chief cleric?” He headed for the King’s Wall: the fortification that surrounded this level. Wolfstone took a lantern from an iron sconce and walked along the wall until he came to the door of a storage room.

Mama, you are frightening me,” said Destina. “I saw the shape of a dragon. These are nothing but lees, the dregs, dead yeast. Here, I will show you!” The characters of Tanis and Raistlin stand out in my mind, and I'm sure in the collective subconscious of fantasydom. Although one character in the group admittedly came close, I had never encountered fantasy or sci-fi books without a clear prophesied savior (LOTR potentially notwithstanding and not to imply that messianic narratives aren't enticing). The trilogy, and the group, were not defined by a preordained protagonist with supporting character tropes, or a supporting character who became the focus of the entire narrative. A martyr proved manifest in distant pasts, but the group and narrative explored that individual's actions and consequences for pressing reasons. The narrative began with a bucolic arboreal tavern and then gradually descended into a nightmare, both figurative and literal. Anyway, Destina Rosethorn, my one complaint being her name sounds like it came from Harry Potter fanfic, is a young Solamnic Knight's daughter during the War of the Lance. Her father doesn't believe in the gods but her mother does. After a series of unfortunate events result in Destina losing her father, castle, fiance, and self-respect, she proceeds to hatch upon a plan to use the Device of Time Journeying to save her father from death at the High Clerist's Tower.Plus, Wizards of the Coast has allowed the use of the classic Dragonlance logo with the word “classic” added at the top! She claims to be the daughter of a Solamnic knight,” Hornfel grunted. “Those fools live for the opportunity to die heroes! Do you whatever you must, Wolfstone. Just get rid of the damn thing.” She held out the chalice, and Gregory poured several swallows of red wine from the pitcher into the cup. Gregory and Atieno drank a toast to their daughter. Destina replied with thanks to her parents for giving her life and sipped the wine, admiring the chalice as she did so, turning it around and around in her hand. When she had finished, she handed the cup to her mother. Destina took refuge in the Measure. “Mama, remember what the Measure says: ‘Paladine forges the sword, but man chooses how to wield it.’ That means each person is responsible for what he or she does in this life. The Measure also warns: ‘Trust not the soothsayer, for his words are lies to snare the unwary.’” Destina will not be alone on her journey through the land of Krynn, a fact that was made clear in late 2021 with the reveal of Dragons of Deceit’s cover by artist Philipp Urlich. The noblewoman stands proudly in the center of the frame, flanked by none other than Tasslehoff Burrfoot — one of Dragonlance’s original Companions. To her left is a new character, a mysterious dwarf named Wolfstone from the kingdom of Thorbardin. Behind them stands the equally mysterious copper dragon named Saber.

Gold for the sun, for the sheaf of wheat, for the leaves in autumn,” said Atieno. “Gold for the goddess of the yellow star.” Of course he did,” said Hornfel. “She admitted as much. The woman said the wizard read about it in a book from the library of Palanthas.” But I get it. This story is not mine to tell. It’s theirs. I can only find solace (heh) in the fact that they finally made it to a point in the telling where I’m actually excited to read the thing. From what I understand, the contract with Wizards of the Coast is for three books. So, at least we’ll get two that might be fantastic. And that one is coming later this fall. The following excerpt is set early in the book and has been lightly modified from what will appear in the final version. Wolfstone was silent a moment, not wanting to have refused his king’s command. But in this instance, he had no choice. Hornfel nodded and lowered himself into the chair. He looked tired and haggard, as though he had not slept, and his expression was unusually dark and stern. He waved Wolfstone to a seat. C'mon! It's the Dragonlance! So many years since I read these familiar names: Palanthas, Takhisis, Neraka, etc. I found myself smiling and traveling to my youth.

Dragons of Deceit Speculation about what happens after Dragons of Deceit

Consider this, sire: if the Graygem is hiding among the Theiwar, it has probably been hiding there for centuries unseen, undetected. And now, within a space of a few weeks, this wizard reads about it in a book, you and I stumble across it, and a human female comes seeking it. Chaos has awakened and the gem wants to be found—though not by the wizard, seemingly. It betrayed him.”

This was a big disappointment. The story telling was just too simple for my taste. A plot written by a middle school girl in a summer fantasy workshop. How bad is she at this? I mean, beyond trying to alter time and space with an object the gods can’t control to save her father versus, I dunno, calling her father’s ghost up to contest his will or finding Elistan or Crysania to resurrect him? Asking Astinus to confirm that her father left her keep to her rather than his evil nephew? Straight up murdering her evil cousin and his wife? I mean, still incredibly extreme measures but a little less insane is all I’m saying. Well, Tasslehoff and she end up married. No, I’m not going to explain the circumstances. Come look at the lovely colors, Destina. They are the colors of the kingfisher. Blue above and orange beneath.” It seems Mama saw a bad omen in the dregs, and I believe she spoke a magic charm to ward off evil.”

Atieno was in particularly good spirits. Among her people, a girl attained womanhood at the age of fifteen.

Though most of the side characters were duds, I did like Dalamar the elven wizard, and Wolfstone the dwarf. I don’t think they were particularly well written, but they were more palatable than the rest. It was really a shame that Wolfstone wasn’t more prominent. We must find a way to get it to Himself,” said Wolfstone. “Reorx created the damn thing. He can deal with it. What are your plans for the tall, sire? Why did you bring her to the Life Tree?”
