Straight Pins: Dressmaker pins with sharp tapering points that will not rust are used to anchor muslin or fabric to the dress form while draping. Tailor’s Chalk: A small piece of chalk, approximately 1 ‘/2” square, with two tapered edges. It is used to mark lines temporarily on different points of garment and other alteration points.

You might want to start with fitting muslin to avoid wasting good fabric, but keep in mind that different types and weights of fabric behave very differently when draped, so choose a muslin weight that is close to the weight of your fabric. 4. Create your foundation piece and pin it to your dress form. Draping offers an alternative method of creating a pattern by working directly on the stand with fabric. It offers immediate results but requires a level of dexterity and manipulative skills, which can be taught and developed with practice. For some designers this is a more intuitive process; one that can help to confirm the visualization process needed to realize a three-dimensional form. Draping is the most creative way for a fashion designer to turn design ideas into reality. To create new garment design, designer can draped fabric using a design sketch as a basis. After complete the draping process, fabric is removed from the dress form and it used to create the sewing pattern for the garment. One that is made on the individual is more adequate and less costly than a commercially made form. Figure 1: Fashion draping It is a very useful as many variations in the design can be done easily and considered as time saving method for a fashion designer. Stage 5: Placing and pinning of material onto the stand – A full toile or torso is normally required; however, one side only is needed to model, except for asymmetric designs. Pining of excess fabric has to be done temporarily to the side of the stand and then the fabric is moulded around the stand as desired, allowing the extra fabric to fall freely into the area where the fullness is desired. The techniques used for controlling the drape are given below.

With the Rod Loop Tape acting as the “channel” for the rod, the top hem can be fully sewn closed giving the top of the curtain panel maximum stability. In fact, with many décor weight fabrics, this traditional deep, double hem will probably be all that’s needed to keep the top of the curtain panel straight and stable. Even with lighter weight fabrics, a single layer of Header Tape would be enough to properly stiffen the top edge when using a Rod Loop Tape.

Cut the tape 7½” longer than the finished width of your curtain panel. Pin the resulting length of tape to the top edge of the curtain. Center the tape within the hem, and adjust side to side so the first loop is about 1” in from the left edge.Fold under these 1” ends so the folded end of the tape sits just inside the side hem of your curtain panel. Once it is finished with draping and pinning, the next step is to baste the fabric. In this step, either sew the fabric to the foundation piece or sew the fabric itself to complete the draping process. Figure 7: Basting the Fabric It helps in clear visualization of the garment. With the process of draping, fashion designers can get a proper idea and visualize that how a dress is going to look at the end, even before starting to cut, stitch and design the costume. Clip the edge of the muslin with scissors and tear across the grain with sufficient pressure to break the yarns evenly.
