The ET series are capable plain-paper office printers. I didn’t time the output when I printed text documents, but it was certainly fast – practically, it’s more than fast enough for almost any single user or even for a couple of users to share, and it’s nowhere near sturdy enough to serve a larger workgroup as an office printer, no matter how tempting the ink cost might be. Print quality is also very good – most modern office inkjets do a nice job, and the ET-8550 is certainly right in that range. It’s clearly better than a four year old Epson WorkForce all-in one I had around for comparison. It’s not quite at the level of some of the HP OfficeJets as a text printer. Of course, the gold standard for text printing is a decent laser printer, and no “normal” inkjet is as good as a good laser. I haven’t used the higher-end HPs that claim to be true laser quality, but my suspicion is that they’re quite a bit better than most inkjets – the OfficeJets right below them are notable for their text quality. Note that if you want to use A3+ sheets there is space needed above and to the rear of the printer. I can't print from Windows with a wireless connection after I replaced my router. What should I do? I was able to print from Windows before with an Ethernet connection, but now I can't. What should I do? It can handle up to 100-sheets of A4 via the standard input tray and up to 50-sheets of A4 via the rear feed. It also features a 20-sheet photo tray.

The EcoTank range is known for being versatile in its capacity for creativity. The ET-8500 and ET-8550 EcoTank Printers develop from the media features from their predecessors and offer five different paper feeds to best suit you and your workflow including a new rear straight pass for larger media types, as well as the addition of a touchscreen controlled motorised output tray to safely handle your prints. The feature to note is the rise at the red end of the spectral plot. This is typical of dye inks and one reason why getting good B&W prints from dye based printers can take some effort. It can show as an illuminant metamerism, especially under tungsten lighting, which has a strong red/IR bias to its spectrum.
What's in the box?
Mobile devices connect via Wi-Fi Direct or over a network. In addition to using Smart Panel, you can use your phone or tablet to print photos or manage the printer via Android Direct Printing, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, or the Epson Connect app. The devices attached can be shared on your network, as well as being an optional repository for scans made with the built in scanner. This is a printer that can fire the printing enthusiasm – sure, paper will cost and the inks will need filling up, but it’s easy to use. Color rendition is rich and vibrant, often a little too vivid and saturated if you let the automatic ‘Photo Enhance’ option have its way. This is fine for some users, but if you are just looking for something ‘that works’ the limitations of available media may be an issue to start with.

The scanner has a rated 1,200 x 4,800 dpi resolution – what you choose to use it at though will depend a lot on what you are scanning and why. The glass is ~8.5″ x 14″ It’s possible for the computer settings to override the settings on the printer, but I always make a habit of setting the correct paper and size if possible, on the printer first. This has, over the years, saved me an awful lot of wasted paper though mistakes, in return for a few seconds setting the printer…The option for 2-Sided Printing (Windows) or Two-sided Printing Settings (Mac) is gray or not available. Compare the graph with this one using the same paper, but the VFA setting. The flat curve is what I expect to see from pigment ink printers. There are also a wide variety of third-party apps available to enable wireless printing through Apple devices, even to machines that are not natively AirPrint compatible printers. By sharing a printer installed on an Apple Mac or Windows Pc over a wireless network any printer may be able to take advantage of the AirPrint features. Be careful with the width set for custom papers – there seems to be limits for what can be fed through a particular slot.When it comes to speed, it’s a mixed picture. Printing an A3 photo at its best settings, the ET-8550 lags a long way behind the Pixma PRO-200. While Canon’s A3 printer can produce a stunning photo in just over three minutes, the ET-8550 takes well over ten minutes. It’s more competitive at a smaller scale, though, with six 6x4in photos printing in 8mins 47secs, only two seconds behind the Pixma PRO-200. AirPrint enables users to print wirelessly from within applications on Apple devices to AirPrint Compatible Printers connected to a wireless network. You can use your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to easily print via Airprint without the need to install drivers or configure the printer queue. Just tap 'print' and select your AirPrint compatible printer, and print!....It's that simple. Now, it doesn’t mention the ET-8550 specifically and I did find some glitches in setting custom paper sizes, but when it worked it worked just fine (On a Mac running 10.14 – we have no win PCs or new Macs here)
