Trigger warning: the culture war takes aim at Christianity in this one. I thought I knew where that was headed, but it went somewhere fairly different and suitably horrifying to everyone involved. Croshaw loves to laugh at all sides of current culture wars. I probably don't always find it as funny as he does, but it's good to see things from a different perspective. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche were two of the first philosophers considered fundamental to the existentialist movement, though neither used the term "existentialism" and it is unclear whether they would have supported the existentialism of the 20th century. They focused on subjective human experience rather than the objective truths of mathematics and science, which they believed were too detached or observational to truly get at the human experience. Like Pascal, they were interested in people's quiet struggle with the apparent meaninglessness of life and the use of diversion to escape from boredom. Unlike Pascal, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche also considered the role of making free choices, particularly regarding fundamental values and beliefs, and how such choices change the nature and identity of the chooser. [63] Kierkegaard's knight of faith and Nietzsche's Übermensch are representative of people who exhibit freedom, in that they define the nature of their own existence. Nietzsche's idealized individual invents his own values and creates the very terms they excel under. By contrast, Kierkegaard, opposed to the level of abstraction in Hegel, and not nearly as hostile (actually welcoming) to Christianity as Nietzsche, argues through a pseudonym that the objective certainty of religious truths (specifically Christian) is not only impossible, but even founded on logical paradoxes. Yet he continues to imply that a leap of faith is a possible means for an individual to reach a higher stage of existence that transcends and contains both an aesthetic and ethical value of life. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche were also precursors to other intellectual movements, including postmodernism, and various strands of psychotherapy. [ citation needed] However, Kierkegaard believed that individuals should live in accordance with their thinking. [64] Dostoyevsky [ edit ] Gurnow, Michael (2008-10-15). "Zarathustra . . . Cthulhu . In contrast, the inauthentic is the denial to live [ clarification needed] in accordance with one's freedom. This can take many forms, from pretending choices are meaningless or random, convincing oneself that some form of determinism is true, or "mimicry" where one acts as "one should". [ citation needed] This becomes a plot point later in the novel when Alison's neighbor claims Shgshthx is the Fluidic Killer. Unfortunately they can't identify which Shgshthx it is clearly enough for Alison to understand. Turns out the Shgshthx in question is the original body who's killing its renegade bits via its infusion in Jessica. Sartre had traveled to Germany in 1930 to study the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, [81] and he included critical comments on their work in his major treatise Being and Nothingness. Heidegger's thought had also become known in French philosophical circles through its use by Alexandre Kojève in explicating Hegel in a series of lectures given in Paris in the 1930s. [82] The lectures were highly influential; members of the audience included not only Sartre and Merleau-Ponty, but Raymond Queneau, Georges Bataille, Louis Althusser, André Breton, and Jacques Lacan. [83] A selection from Being and Time was published in French in 1938, and his essays began to appear in French philosophy journals.A more recent contributor to the development of a European version of existentialist psychotherapy is the British-based Emmy van Deurzen. [118] She also begins to suspect Elizabeth's actions as intentional personal slights, and feels the need to ask "Is it because I'm Indian!?" a fact which no one present was even aware of, nor ever brings up again. a b c Samuel M. Keen, "Gabriel Marcel" in Paul Edwards (ed.) The Encyclopaedia of Philosophy, Macmillan Publishing Co, 1967. Although many outside Scandinavia consider the term existentialism to have originated from Kierkegaard, it is more likely that Kierkegaard adopted this term (or at least the term "existential" as a description of his philosophy) from the Norwegian poet and literary critic Johan Sebastian Cammermeyer Welhaven. [20] This assertion comes from two sources:

Sartre argued that a central proposition of existentialism is that existence precedes essence, which is to say that individuals shape themselves by existing and cannot be perceived through preconceived and a priori categories, an "essence". The actual life of the individual is what constitutes what could be called their "true essence" instead of an arbitrarily attributed essence others use to define them. Human beings, through their own consciousness, create their own values and determine a meaning to their life. [23] This view is in contradiction to Aristotle and Aquinas, who taught that essence precedes individual existence. [24] Although it was Sartre who explicitly coined the phrase, similar notions can be found in the thought of existentialist philosophers such as Heidegger, and Kierkegaard:

Thomas, Paul Lee (2008). Reading, Learning, Teach Ralph Ellison. Peter Lang. ISBN 9781433100901 . Retrieved 26 March 2015. It's All About Me: Nita’s tendency to make everything about her and accusing Elizabeth of sabotaging her interview hints that her crusade is more for attention than actually caring about discrimination. Million to One Chance: Surprisingly averted. The ministry insists that the odds of someone being both a vampire and a healer are incredibly slim, as are the chances of this ability working at long range, as would have to be the case to explain every death via Adam's theory. While their alternative explanation turns out to be incorrect, they're right about this. The real culprit uses sleight-of-hand to make it seem as though they're actually healing someone when another person is really behind it, and one of the victims was killed by a completely unrelated being with vampiric powers.

Success!

In the very end Alison gets publicly eviscerated by the press for forcibly undoing a Demonic Possession, even though it was a clear act of immediate self-defense that saved hundreds of people. Possessed Jessica is viewed as nothing but a victim and martyr for dual-consciousness rights, with the fact that she was actively committing an explicitly racially-motivated mass murder at the time ignored by the public at large. That the original Jessica did not consent to the situation is also conveniently ignored. Gabriel Marcel, long before coining the term "existentialism", introduced important existentialist themes to a French audience in his early essay "Existence and Objectivity" (1925) and in his Metaphysical Journal (1927). [70] A dramatist as well as a philosopher, Marcel found his philosophical starting point in a condition of metaphysical alienation: the human individual searching for harmony in a transient life. Harmony, for Marcel, was to be sought through "secondary reflection", a "dialogical" rather than "dialectical" approach to the world, characterized by "wonder and astonishment" and open to the "presence" of other people and of God rather than merely to "information" about them. For Marcel, such presence implied more than simply being there (as one thing might be in the presence of another thing); it connoted "extravagant" availability, and the willingness to put oneself at the disposal of the other. Xanatos Gambit: This was the plan in setting up an obscure American fundamentalist pastor as Modern Miracle's opponent in the faith healing contest. If he somehow wins, fine; the Govrnment is on the Christian side via the Church of England in any case. If he loses then the anti-Christian side can enjoy their win and the Christian side (especially the Church of England members) will immediately dismiss it as him not representing 'real' Christianity. Either way everyone will move on to the next thing, which is the main thing the Government wants.

Godzilla Threshold: Nicholas Fisk appears to have been one for the Ministry, to be employed only in dire times. This growing crisis is a real test of China’s statesmanship, just as it challenges the political and diplomatic skills of South Korea and Japan. They all have a deep interest in finding a long-term settlement of the persisting North Korean question rather than having to deal with its perpetual escalation under this young leader, who has carried out 80 missile and nuclear tests in the last six years. Whether it is now possible to halt and dismantle its nuclear weapons programme under international agreement and oversight, as distinct from deterring it with overwhelming US nuclear superiority, is a key issue in the present confrontation. The sheer complexity of what is at stake and the real danger of miscalculating an escalating military strategy with two such volatile leaders as Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump makes this an exceptionally difficult issue. Luper, Steven, ed. (2000). Existing: An Introduction to Existential Thought. Mountain View, California: Mayfield. ISBN 0-7674-0587-0.Casual Danger Dialog: Diablerie is unfazed by a gun being drawn on him, both before and after it goes off. The protagonist, Alison, still works as an audience proxy, possibly through the very convenient caveat that magic is inherently unknowable as well as the fact she's barely a few steps ahead of the reader at any given time. Most of the DEDA staff remain static in terms of character as they probably should. The awkwardness of Adam and Victor’s forced breakup is a nice contrast to their ability to atomise anything the size of an Olympic swimming pool. The revelation that the moustache twirling and cape swishing of Doctor Diablerie is entirely a front isn’t surprising but adds a good amount of depth and menace to the most outright comedic character of the series.
