About this deal

Open up your posture. Turning toward the other person, instead of angling your body away, can show interest. Crossing your arms can suggest a closed-off attitude, so aim to keep them at your sides instead. Choose an outgoing student and ask their name. When they tell you their name, say, “No. Your name is [make up some ridiculous name]!” Then, ask the class what the student’s new job is. Encourage outrageous ideas. Go through some of the topics on the board and elicit ideas for the student’s new persona. These traits may not be the first thing others notice — but they’ll still help distinguish you from the crowd, not to mention have a more lasting impact on your relationships. Cubitos doesn't actually feel like a better Quarriors, however, because it is actually a race game. It actually feels like a lighter, faster The Quest for El Dorado. This is high praise from me. Stationfall - Might be too chaotic for my tastes, but this looks like a hoot. Its a more complex "CONSPIRACY" with a sci-fi theme and a giant monkey. The stories this game is going to create are certainly going to be memorable, but is the game?

Have you ever played the board game, Perfection? It’s the game where you have a bunch of different shapes with the goal of fitting them inside their respective holes. I loved this game as a kid—I could literally spend hours fitting in the colorful yellow pieces and taking them out again. One of my all-time favorite books, How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleby Dale Carnegie, has an awesome tip that I use in every single conversation: use the other person’s name. Studies have found that, on average, our first impressions of people are 76% accurate. This means we are pretty good at creating gut instincts. How long does it take to make a first impression? You should aim to speak in this range—and even err on the lower end of your range if you want to make a great vocal impression that people will vote for. This is also a great tip if you have a phone interview or video call!

I highly recommend getting some of your favorite outfits or ornaments together and asking friends you trust what they think of when they see them. For many men, they do not realize that their watch can say a lot about them. For women, purses and large earrings or jewelry can also have unintended meaning to a new person they are meeting. Description – Students meet and greet their classmates’ imaginary personas then choose who gave the best first impression. ( Note to teacher – This activity works best with eight or more students, but if you have a small class, students can use their real identities and not choose the most popular person.) If you hear your conversation buddy using one of these phrases, you can also use similar sense lingo to get on their good side. In fact, I used this same technique just last week when I got off a Zoom call with a team member. It went something like this: Norman was desperate and traditional medicine wouldn’t help, so he decided to turn to laughter. He rented every funny video he could find, rewatched and watched them, laughing out loud for 6 months in his self-imposed “laughter therapy.” Fort Circle Games has made a very impressive first release. The Shores of Tripoli is a light card driven wargame about the first Barbary war. I don't know if there are any other games that cover the Barbary war. Kudos to the designers for their originality.

Uleman, J. S., Blader, S., & Todorov, A. (2005). Implicit impressions. In R. Hassin, J. S. Uleman, & J. A. Bargh (Eds.), The new unconscious (pp. 362–392). New York, NY: Oxford University Press. Wear makeup. If you’re a woman, in most cases makeup will help you. In an experiment by the Peases, 4 similar-looking female assistants were hired to help sell their training products at a seminar. However, some were wearing makeup and/or glasses, and the others weren’t. The assistant wearing both makeup and glasses were described as confident, intelligent, sophisticated, and the most outgoing; however, some female customers saw her as confident but also cold and arrogant as they saw her as “competition” rather than a possible friend. And, not surprisingly, assistants who wore no makeup were rated the worst. It’s also universally-recognized even in isolated tribes, according to a 1989 study. The Peases mention that monkeys and apes use it, suggesting that it’s an inborn, evolutionary gesture. And also, way worse balanced. Everything in this game is determined by random selection. The die rolling implementation is pretty terrible, but that's not the problem here: the problem is card draw. If you need to play troops and you didn't draw any, then too bad. If you need victory points and you don't have the right combination of resources or points, too bad. The whole thing becomes one big random mess. Frank's Zoo is a climbing game with a circular climb. Like most climbing games, the goal is to get rid of all your cards before your opponents. The circle is very strange for examples, it has two separate loops, one for aquatic animals and one for land animals. There's also the hedgehog which is in the middle of the food chain but is very powerful as it can only be beaten by a single animal (foxes).

Warm up

Research from many labs has also consistently shown that implicit impressions are resistant to change (e.g., Gregg, Seibt, & Banaji, 2006; Mann & Ferguson, 2015). When changes in impressions do occur, it is typically explicit, but not implicit, trait inferences that are altered (Olcaysoy Okten & Moskowitz, 2017b). For example, after learning that the person who took the elevator up one flight on several occasions actually works out regularly, perceivers update their initial explicit judgment of her being lazy. However, they still tend to classify the person as lazy in an implicit memory task. Thus, implicit biases can persist and affect interpersonal interactions in significant ways, even when perceivers are convinced that they have changed their impressions in light of new information. Then you add an even better wrinkle: an automaton worker in the form of a supervisor that dings players who behave incorrectly in the game. Early in the game you really have to think about how you're going to mitigate her movements, which you can do in a number of different ways as long as you plan it right. Whether you’re at a networking event, pitching your boss, or schmoozing at a party, you have to nail that first interaction… Because you might not get a second chance.

Here’s a simple task for you: Smile! Oh, c’mon. As a professional behavior investigator, I can tell you’re not really smiling. Really smile this time—I know you can do it! Dougherty, T. W., Ebert, R. J., & Callender, J. C. (1986). Policy capturing in the employment interview. Journal of Applied Psychology, 71, 9–15. Railways on the Isle of Wight - 1862 is my favorite 18xx game of all time. 1860 is the only other published game by the same designer. Although there are no mergers it feels like a similar game where you try and build up the best company and use other company investments to feed into your primary money maker. The expansion looks great too, with every train in the game being unique with special powers. Also it works with two and three players.

If you get asked the stereotypical “What do you do?” Be sure you have an amazing elevator pitch ready. Here, I helped people with their elevator pitch make-overs: Gunaydin, G., Selcuk, E., & Zayas, V. (2017). Impressions based on a portrait predict, 1-month later, impressions following a live interaction. Social Psychological and Personality Science, 8, 36–44. Can you see the difference? On the left picture—sure, I’m smiling and you can see my pearly whites. But my eyes are saying, “Oh no. Not YOU again. Please, can someone come over and save me!?” You can avoid unintentionally giving offense by making sure your clothing and accessories don’t promote stereotypes or appropriate elements of other cultures.
