Post sunset, photos came out a bit murky with slightly reduced dynamic range in the shadows, but they still looked quite good. The Night mode takes care of these minor shortcomings and keeps streetlights and bright spots from getting overexposed, while bumping up the brightness and details. The phone shot crisp photos in low-light scenes when Night mode was used with the primary wide-angle camera, but delivered only passable photos when used on the ultra-wide-angle camera. We have reviewed the 4G model and it's easy to tell that the Snapdragon 865 silicon makes quite a difference in terms of performance, and also doesn't heat up as much as Samsung's own Exynos SoC. The Night mode here is particularly useful, as it utilizes the main camera’s large sensor to take in lots of light in low-light settings. It’s pretty easy to use, as you don’t have to hold the phone still for too long, as some night modes require you to do, and the resulting pictures are pretty well-lit.

So if you prioritize a fast refresh rate over resolution, you can effectively enjoy the same screen performance on the S20 SE as on its premium siblings. The main 12MP sensor takes some really great snaps, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as it’s a camera we’ve seen multiple times before and been impressed with on each occasion. Samsung remains the king when it comes to colour-rich, deeply saturated and slightly oversharpened shots and those traits are clear to see here. These images are primed for social media and I can completely understand why they’re so popular. The Snapdragon 865 performs better in benchmark tests than the Exynos variation, but the real wins come with the improved battery life – something you can read more on below. As you’d expect from the flagship chipset, performance is top-drawer. Whether you’re gaming on the device, streaming Xbox titles via GamePass or pushing the phone in any other ways it’ll handle everything without getting hot or slowing down.

The main camera has a large sensor, so it ‘sees’ light, and therefore color, better – snaps looked bright and punchy, with everything from blue skies to green plants looking bold. Samsung’s effective AI scene optimization likely has a hand here too, as that tweaks your images depending on what you’re pointing the camera at. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G runs Samsung's One UI 3.1, which is based on Android 11. Combined with the 120Hz refresh rate display, the Galaxy S20 FE 5G felt quite fluid in daily use. I felt no hiccups whatsoever when running native apps, third-party apps or switching between the two. There are plenty of preinstalled Samsung apps. The phone also comes with a few third-party apps from Microsoft and Facebook, but these along with several Samsung apps (like Samsung Shop, Samsung Members, Samsung Global Goals, Notes, Internet etc.) can be uninstalled if not needed. During the review period, I was not bombarded with ads or promotional notifications. I did receive the occasional notification from the Galaxy App Store, but these can be turned off in the system settings. That isn't the 8K of the S20 or Note 20 series, but 8K is definitely a niche need right now; you really only want that if you intend to crop in post-production. The rear module consists of a 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide-angle camera, an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto camera (3X optical zoom) and a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. Selfies are handled by a 32-megapixel f/2.2 camera that shoots 8-megapixel binned images.Phone and tablet must be signed in to the same Samsung account and the “Call and text other devices” feature must be enabled on both. Are the pictures better than the Pixel 4a? For me, no. But that’s subjective and you certainly do get crispier details and brighter colours here. The Pixel 4a still pips it for dynamic range, natural bokeh and, importantly, night mode. Many have complained about the decreased performance and battery skills of the Exynos version vs the Qualcomm so it’s great to see Samsung deciding to give a wider launch to the arguably superior model.
While I often struggled to make it through do with the S20 and S20 Plus, doing so with the S20 FE is easy and I can easily achieve more than six hours of screen on time – often more than an hour more. Out-of-the-box the S20 comes with Android 10 and the latest version of One UI. Samsung’s interface has improved immeasurably over the past few years and while it’s very much different from Google’s own vision of Android, I still like how it looks and works. Samsung has also indicated you’ll get three years of system updates, starting with Android 11, which is always good news. AnTuTu reported a score of 6,41,038, while Geekbench's single-core and multi-core results were 560 and 3,136 respectively. These are higher than what the Exynos-based model managed (4,62,330 in AnTuTu; 517 and 2,573 in Geekbench) but are lower than the performance figures we've seen from Snapdragon 888-powered smartphones in the same price segment. The 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display showcases oversaturated colours when using the default Vivid screen mode. Switch it to Natural and the colours look quite dull but I found this a lot better. I wish there was a preset between the two modes which could have delivered colours that were a bit more restrained, especially for watching movies or shows.
