About this deal

It turned out that my father had two more children, including another daughter just a bit younger than me. For these reasons, I no longer believe that we were able to conduct an appropriate investigation of the Agency and its relationship to Oswald. Anything that the Agency told us that incriminated, in some fashion, the Agency may well be reliable as far as it goes, but the truth could well be that it materially understates the matter. What contemporaneous reporting is or was in the Agency's DRE files? We will never know, for the Agency now says that no reporting is in the existing files. Are we to believe that its files were silent in 1964 or during our investigation?

Why did Blakey choose not to fight harder and more publicly about it? Why did he seem to retire from the fray? During the House investigation, Blakey assigned two of his young law school student assistants, Edward Lopez and Dan Hardway, to the CIA. They were set up in an office at CIA and given great freedom to request documents. It would be another 30 years before I got an explanation, which turned out to be astonishingly simple yet bewildering in its complications. It was an answer which exploded everything I thought I knew about my upbringing.

Recently, Blakey established an award presented to students during Student Research Day, the George Blakey Library Research Award for Presentation and Oral Presentation Winners. He also supports the George T. Blakey U.S. History Essay Prize for undergraduate students; the essays are on any topic related to the history of the United States. Most recently in October 2016, Blakey was inducted into the Indiana University Presidents Circle. The Presidents Circle honors Indiana University’s most generous donors. Members are presented with a personalized medallion cast with a portion of the original carillon bells that once rang in the IU Bloomington Student Building and their names are added to the honor wall in the Indiana Memorial Union. THE truth was revealed to me in a phone call shortly after my father’s death. It was the summer of 2013 and George, then 77, had passed away after a bout of pneumonia. It was unexpected and left us in a fragile state – but we were not the only ones. Later, as the details of his shadow life and secret family poured out, I found myself overwhelmed by the parallels and by some upsetting contrasts, too.

Born in Rotterdam, George was the son of Albert Behar, a Turkish-born Sephardic Jew, and his wife, Catherine (nee Beijderwellen), a Dutch Protestant. His birth fell on Armistice day four years after the end of the first world war and this was the reason, Blake said in his autobiography, No Other Choice (1990), that he was named George. His father, a naturalised Briton, had been decorated fighting with the British army in the recent conflict – against his fellow Turks. Could he be induced to kill the president for organized crime reasons unbeknownst to him? I think the answer is yes and compelling. (11) Letter signed by a group of authors including G. Robert Blakey, Anthony Summers, John McAdams, Gerald Posner, in the New York Review of Books (18th December, 2003) The Richmond Art Museum (RAM) also benefited from Blakey’s leadership and generosity. He served as a RAM trustee for several years and was instrumental in creating the organization’s permanent collection policy. Blakey remained an avid supporter and patron of RAM after his service on the board. Professor Blakey’s hands shook slightly as he spoke to the group gathered for dinner on Saturday night. He confessed that he had trusted the CIA too much.A: You don't have to separate the anti-Castro Cubans and organized crime. There are substantial overlaps. Santo Trafficante (who some claim had met Ruby) from Tampa was in Cuba, and many of his associates in illegal businesses are Cuban and were people who were thrown out of Cuba by Castro. They're both organized crime and anti-Castro Cubans. On the other hand, not every anti-Castro Cuban is involved in organized crime. Indeed most are not. They were legitimate ex-patriots. ABC News: Let me ask you: 40 years after the fact and 25 years after your investigation, who killed John F. Kennedy? Assuming that Oswald fired the fatal shot, he said, "These top CIA case officers are guilty of negligence."

The invaders were hauled off as a further attempt was made to storm the course near Canal Turn by protesters using ladders. Thankfully, the Assassination Records Review Board has declassified many of the files of the House Select Committee on Assassinations. This process is ongoing as it winds down to its termination date of October 1, 1998. But there is quite enough now available to begin to get an accurate gauge on the performance of that committee, more specifically the record of its controversial second Chief Counsel, G. Robert Blakey... There was no suggestion my father had ever strayed until he met Georgia’s mother, an aspiring actress, in a London nightclub in 1976 and fell in love. Two years later, Georgia arrived, followed by her brother Oliver in 1988. The evidence shows that the FBI's failure to investigate the allegation that Marcello had discussed assassinating President Kennedy constituted a violation of the Director's promise to investigate all circumstances surrounding the President's murder even after the official Warren Commission investigation had ended in 1964. In his appearance before the Commission on May 6, 1964, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had personally affirmed that promise stating:After teaching for 33 years, Blakey retired in May 2001. He opened a bookstore in downtown Richmond, The Old Book Shoppe, in an effort to help provide books to the community and serve as a promoter of literary works. Q: Mobsters talked of their hatred of Kennedy. Could you talk about that - which mobsters, what did they say? Clamour by Conservative MPs led to the decision to prosecute. Randle and Pottle, who defended themselves, persuaded the jury that the government had had sufficient evidence long before to prosecute them but had declined to do so. The jury unanimously acquitted them – in the very same Old Bailey courtroom where Blake had been found guilty nearly 30 years earlier. As one of the reporters said in a panel discussion, this is a story without an ending, and how satisfying is that?

This was the period,” Blake recalled, “when 10,000 were dying on my right and 10,000 were dying on my left. It was a period of violent conflict and I was in the middle of it. I saw the Korean war with my own eyes, young American PoWs dying and enormous American Flying Fortresses bombing small defenceless villages. And when you saw that, you don’t feel particularly proud to be on the western side.” As we grieved in West London, my father’s mistress and children were coming to terms with their own loss, something they had discovered only when his obituary – as a noted economic historian – appeared in The Times.

They greeted me with a huge embrace. Perched uncomfortably on a hard wooden bench, I realised how strange the situation was. As for us having near-identical names, we concluded it was so he wouldn’t get caught out with a slip of the tongue when discussing anything to do with either one of us. b) The conspiracy was politically motivated. Its purpose was to stop J.F.K.'s movement toward détente in the Cold War, and it succeeded in doing that. It must therefore be regarded as a palace coup d'etat. Established in 1992, the Presidents Circle honors Indiana University’s most generous donors. New Presidents Circle members were presented with a personalized medallion cast with a portion of the original carillon bells that once rang in the IU Bloomington Student Building. In addition, their names were added to the honor wall in the Indiana Memorial Union. Blakey was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Carolyn Smith Blakey, who passed away in 2003, as well as his parents, George T. and Eulela Lyons Blakey, and sister, Sally Capobianco. He is survived by his sister, ByGee Gutierrez of Cincinnati, OH, and brother-in-law, James Capobianco, of New Jersey, as well as many friends, colleagues and former students who remember him fondly.
