Ace of Pentacles– A gift, a new income source or a prize. A renovation, DIY or new build project. A new job, career or business. Prosperity, reward, improving finances. In symbolism, the Gilded Tarot is fundamentally Rider-Waite but it is not a clone or even a re-drawing of Pamela Colman-Smith’s very familiar art. Rather than simply copying, Ciro has used its imagery as a jumping off point for his imagination and inspiration. The Gilded Tarot isn’t one to use for its comparative historical symbolism or occult and esoteric depth, but the card images are unique and beautiful, feeling more like a beautiful fantasy or the inhabiting of a hyper-real dream-world than the Rider-Waite ever did. Magician 1— “As I will, so must it be.” Focus, will power, concentration, control. All the tools available to complete the task in hand.

After a long wait, the commercial edition of the Gilded Tarot has now been published by Llewellyn. My copy arrived this morning and I thought it appropriate to review it, as a postscript to my original article on the limited edition.Eight of Swords– Surrounded by problems of your own making. Feeling dis-empowered. Unable to move forward. Fear of the future. Queen of Pentacles– Practical, home-loving, creative, hard working. Likes to help others but also encourages them to help themselves. A do-er rather than a listener. Prefers to use her own methods. Likes children and animals. Eight of Pentacles– Honing your talent, learning new skills. Training course may be required or offered. Change of profession.

Hermit 9— “I want to be alone; I must be alone.” Solitude, introspection, self-knowledge, study, withdrawal from relationships. Time to pause and think. Two of Pentacles– Financial planning and budgeting. More money going out than coming in. Waiting for results: medical tests, exams, etc. The Ten of Cups shows the typical family scene - but only the mother and daughter, and family cat, are shown sitting in front of the family home. Instead of a rainbow, ten cups are arched over the house. Marchetti mentions that this would be the view of the head of the household coming home to his wife and child. I find this approach a bit disconcerting - as if part of the family has been left out. Seven of Swords– Theft, deception. Retrieving something lost, for example: self-confidence, peace of mind. Four of Wands– Achievement, a job well done, a resting period. Possible marriage, new home or other celebration.

Temperance 14— “I’d like to teach the world to sing…” Harmony, healing, blending, integration, moderation, consideration. Good chemistry, balance. Conservation and care of the environment. Queen of Cups– Empathic, compassionate, emotionally supportive, good listener, gentle, quiet, reserved. Loves babies and children. The Hanging Man (Hanged Man) is shown suspended by chains from what appears to be the Wheel of Fortune. To me, he appears to be flailing, as his hands are free and out at his sides - one arm hanging down, the other bent up at the elbow. Queen of Wands– Warm, ambitious, fun, flirty, cheerful, disorganised, no shrinking violet, may be temperamental. Likes older children and teenagers whom she can interact with. The Ace of Cups shows a large golden cup with a blue eye in the center. The light is pouring down from above. On the cup is an arc of six symbols representing the cycle of the moon.
