Sadly, just because a kettle is 'sustainable' that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good all-around model - that's where our Eco Buy kettles come in. These are models we've chosen because they're excellent performers and are energy efficient. We also prioritise kettles from brands that perform well in our product experience surveys.

Kettle, Fast Boiling, And Low Best Kettles 2023: Top Quiet Kettle, Fast Boiling, And Low

KitchenAid’s Artisan kettle comes in as the most expensive model on our list, but we found it to be worth every penny of its premium price tag. Its sleek, matte finish and general design are beautiful and the range of colours available make it easy to tailor its look to suit your kitchen. The app isn’t the cleanest, in the sense that it assumes people will be setting up multiple Smarter-branded connected appliances – the company has a connected coffee machine in its product lineup – in multiple locations such as at home and in the office. As such, you’ll need to create a ‘Home’ or relevant location and assign your iKettle 3.0. Stovetop kettle: This is the most basic kind of kettle, which you simply put on the stove and heat up. When the water is boiling, it will whistle to let you know. They can be (although are not always) the cheapest kind of kettle, as well as having an aesthetic, retro appeal. They are less susceptible to damage caused by mineral deposits than electric kettles and require neither a mains plug nor space on your work surface. Are rapid boiling kettles actually faster than normal ones? An increasingly popular (and rather expensive) alternative is to install a hot water tap and do away with your kettle altogether. The Smarter iKettle 3rd Generation is a good kettle. It boils water and allows you to adjust the temperature exactly as you like it. The design is simple and minimalistic, allowing you to control from your phone without any flashy manual dials.

So, on firing up the app you first need to select the location and then the appliance, before you’re at the screen necessary to begin using the kettle. It’s a minor frustration – one that could so easily be improved. There aren't that many app-connected kettles on the market, still, but if you're trying to choose between them, here are some questions to help you figure things out. How much water do you generally need to boil? For me, the main selling point of the iKettle 3.0 is its voice assistant support, which wasn’t available in the previous generation Smarter iKettle 2.0. Alongside Alexa and Google Assistant, the iKettle 3.0 can also work with IFTTT recipes, allowing you to be pretty creative. Taking a maximum of 1.7-litres, with a minimum boil of 500ml, this is a good-sized kettle. It can be hard to see the fill lines on the side of kettle, which are marked in litres only, not cups. From the front, there are buttons to select the temperature you want: 70°C, 80°C, 90°C and 100°C.

You're often paying for a premium style, materials and finish. You're also more likely to get extra features such as variable temperature settings.

One of the negatives to iKettle’s mobile automation is that it depends a lot on the app for its features. You can still boil water manually using the button on the kettle, but all the other convenient factors like scheduling and specific temperature adjustments are limited to the app. Inside, you’ll find a stainless steel limescale filter, which can be removed for cleaning. Given its tough build quality, this should prove robust and reliable. This 1.7-litre kettle (500ml minimum boil) is fast thanks to its 3kW element: it took 1m 17s to boil 500ml of water in our tests. Our only real complaint is that the lid-open button isn’t very well placed and it takes two hands to open the lid: one to press the button and one to hold the kettle. Where the Pour Over is really useful is with its variable temperature selection, available in one-degree increments. No matter what type of drink you want to make, then, you can get the perfect temperature. It’s also a super quiet kettle thanks to that slow boil, meaning it won’t disrupt any conversations.

A loud whistling kettle can be really annoying, particularly if you have an open-plan kitchen/living area. Some kettles are marketed as being especially quiet, but this doesn't always hold true.

Some users have also reported that the iKettle has a tendency to suddenly disconnect from their Wi-Fi network. A stable network connection is needed if you want to enjoy continuous use of the iKettle. But, once it’s properly synced with your smart hub, making hot drinks couldn’t be simpler. Next up is useability. We test how easy the kettle is to fill, hold and pour, its weight and whether the fill lines are easy to read. If the kettle has any additional features beyond boiling water, we also look at how useful these are. Finally, we take into consideration each kettle’s build quality and design, and whether these reflect its price. According to Recycle Now, around one million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste are generated every year. Every item that has either a plug, a charger, batteries or carries a crossed-out wheelie bin logo can be recycled, and that includes kettles.
