While cleaning up my sewing area (fraying Monk’s cloth is messy business!), I discovered a large piece of scrap Monk’s cloth leftover from my initial costume cutting. It was long- about 80 inches or so-and about 18 inches across at the widest point where it folded, narrowing a bit at the other ends. I looked at it for a few minutes, and then I had an idea. This would make a perfect Jawa bag! Jawas are known for carrying around a variety of gadgets, so it is important to include two leather utility belts strapped across the body in your costume. These belts will add a touch of realism to your costume and will make it look more like a true Jawa. Jawas were passionate scavengers, seeking out technology for sale or trade in the deep deserts in their huge sandcrawler transports. They had a reputation for swindling, as they had a penchant for selling old equipment such as outdated faulty droids to moisture farmers. However, they were extremely passive beings, and hardly put up any resistance to colonists of their planet unlike the other natives the Sand people, instead seeing foreigners as an excellent business opportunity.

I traced the shape I wanted with tailor’s chalk, making sure that the fold was at the shoulders. Basically, the shape is straight along the sides at the top until a few inches below the armpits. From there, it flares out a bit to allow for good draping at the bottom. The skirt part of the robe should be in an A-line shape. Then I cut it all out with a cutting wheel. Easy! Next, I sewed in a wired cable to the front edge, which improved the shape of the hood opening. However, I didn’t like how floppy it still was. The front of the hood shouldn’t dip down over the face. It’s easy to see how the weight of the cable was pulling down the front of that hood. I needed to fix that! And finally, shoes. I sacrificed a pair of wedge boots for our niece, an old pair of Sketchers for me, and an old pair of running shoes for my husband and simply covered them with scrap fabric (and spray paint weathered them like the Jawa robe/dress). The Jawa is one size fits most, and it fits all three of us very well, so we can all enjoy the new Jawa costume. A family that Jawas together stays together!
