About this deal

Comments: Allow some time for the scotch to oxidize and the elements to coalesce. No water is needed. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Nose: Somewhat weird nose. Caramel and a strong whiff of a pungent musk. Probably the worst nose of any single malt I've tried. Clove, ginger, and strong molasse B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.

This Jura 10 years is definitely better than the old Jura 10. It’s less bitter, less funky and a whole lot more flavorful. The overarching flavor and aroma of smoked apricots is pleasant even if it’s not very deep or complex. I don’t know if it’s the addition of the sherry casks to the mix, longer aging in the sherry casks or what exactly they’ve done different but it’s a nice change – it’s far more drinkable and enjoyable than the old Jura 10 years. In the glass, Jura 10 Year Old has a lightly coppered, golden appearance, something like apple juice. The liquid is somewhat viscous, leaving just a few legs after a swish and those resembling the veins of a leaf. Jura 10 Year Old is the core expression in the distillery’s single malt line, and has gone through at least three changes of appearance and titling since my first exposure to Jura 10 Year Old some years ago. Once upon a time there were two versions of this release, a 43% ABV, 750ml bottling for the American market and a 40% ABV, 70cl bottling for the rest of the world, and both were once titled “Origin.” The Isle of Jura - west of the Highlands and northeast of Islay, is not that easy to reach. It takes several planes, trains and... a ferry (and the best part of the day) to reach it. That may be part of the charm of this magical island. George Orwell resided there while writing his classic 1984 and called it ‘an extremely unget-at-able place’. Nose: Quite fresh and delicate. Very floral and earthly, like smelling the summer hay. Oak is there too.

The palate is lively, with sweet honey on the front, some salty and smoky peat and pepper in the middle, and some soft citrus fruit on the end with a hint of bitterness. Jura distillery is a seeming cat of a distillery, founded in 1810 and possessed of nine lives, or at least a timeline of eight owners. The last major rebuild of the distillery was in 1963, from whence it has been producing a variety of single malts. The island of Jura is very difficult to reach, with the distillery being one of the few actual businesses on it (one road, one pub, one distillery). With approximately 200 Diurachs– the Gaelic name for the inhabitants – living on the island, most everyone there knows someone who works at Jura. In 2018, the complete core line of Jura was retired as the distillery decided to move in a new flavor direction. The Jura 10 is the cornerstone of that relaunch, aging in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished for an undisclosed time in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. While many distilleries create either peated or unpeated whiskies, Jura 10 marries together the best of both for a truly unique Island Single Malt that is subtly smoky with a sweet Sherry cask finish. It is matured for ten years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels with an aged Oloroso Sherry cask finish. Jura 10 bottle is totally transparent and colorless, which leads us to this peculiar note about the hue: if you see the bottle, the scotch looks amber to reddish with some brown highlights, but if you pour a dram, it's straw yellow with a slightly greenish cast to it. Of course, the latter is the one I use as a reference. Nose: Hint of salt, heather, alcohol and something which I think might be spiced pear. The slightest smell of cellar (in agood way!) Fairly light nose, but not unpleasant. Shall we say 17/25? This bottle I have just bought is pretty nice, in an odd sort of way. It has quite a bit of character, although I am still not altogether convinced i like the Jura character. 40% is about right for it for me, as I don't want that Jura weirdness to be much more intense. I feel a bit the same about Bowmores. I don't think that higher alcohol content is always better in weird whiskies.Taste: dried oranges, again notes of cereal, orange blossoms, honey, oak wood shavings, ginger and a whiff of iodine. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars.

On the nose, the whisky is light and fragrant, with notes of fresh flowers, gentle cinnamon and nutmeg notes, an undercurrent of fresh grains, and the slightest hint of smoke. Largely standard stuff, aromatically speaking, but it all comes together cleanly and invitingly. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. To my tastes, this Jura 10 Years relaunch is a welcome change and brings a more balanced and inviting character that was missing from the original version. I hope this new approach and style makes its way through their lineup and we start seeing more releases come out that fit along this profile and deliver an even stronger overall portfolio. Jura 10 Years InfoThat's the bad news, the good news is that smell doesn't translate onto the palate. Although not much else does. This doesn't have tremendous character, its balanced but not in the sense of balance big flavours, more in the sense of not too sweet, not too acidic, not too rich, not too thin. It doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't do anything particularly right either.

Jura 10 Year Old. A whisky only Jura could make, born of our Island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from our home. Crafted in unusually tall stills, matured in the fresh sea air and American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and finished in the finest aged Oloroso Sherry butts – it’s the perfect marriage of Highland and Island styles.” We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then.
