Anyone who wants to buy Lady Joker will definitely get their money's worth, it's the perfect book to read and mull over for a long period of time. Whether this tactic works or not remains to be seen. At this moment, however, we can say that we are loving these slots that are without any kind of frills, and entertain us to the fullest. Yes, we are talking about the Lady Joker – a beauty that can kills as easily as it can seduce. But don’t get put off – she is here to help you with all her might and skills. The book starts with a letter from Seiji Okamura to the Hinode Beer Company written in June 1947. He was one of forty employees who resigned from the company’s Kanagawa factory. It transpires in his letter that he is a member of the Baraku people - meaning Hamlet people who are a caste-like minority and the largest discriminated against population in Japan. The letter alleges that these employees received discrimination for being at the bottom of the traditional social herirachy and also for their attempts to have union recognition. They are -- including policeman Handa, who likes the idea of: "playing the innocent at my respectable job as a police officer at MPD when in fact I'm a public enemy ...".Volume I closes with Goda beginning his assignment, arriving early at Shiroyama's home -- just after Shiroyama received the message with the kidnapper's true demands. And, as it turns out, the kidnapping itself is a kind of feint and preamble -- just the beginning of the actual crime and plot the perpetrators have planned (which barely gets rolling in this first half of the novel in the slow and steady build-up of this story). There are the unusual circumstances that there were no police patrols in the vicinity at the time of the kidnapping -- leading Goda to suspect that the criminals had access to a police radio, meaning that someone from the police is involved. It is well worth the wait for anyone interested in a panoramic portrait of modern Japanese society, including its dark corners, as well as fans of intelligent mysteries.” In it, Okamura writes about both his recent resignation from the company (along with some forty other employees) -- due to events surrounding the aborted general labor strike planned for 1 February (a significant incident in Japanese labor history) -- as well as that of one Katsuichi Noguchi several years earlier.

A cast or dramatis personae is provided at the start of the book which becomes increasingly useful as following the initial chapters we follow the story from a range of perspectives.In particular, Hinode's long and complicated ties to the Okada Association -- "an enterprise composed of corporate extortionists, corporate raiders, loan sharks, and financial brokers, among others", and, in fact, the "corporate underling" of a large crime syndicate --, prove problematic; Okada has enough dirt on Hinode to cause them great potential harm, though by the early 1990s -- especially after the 1991 law against organized crime -- Hinode had done its best to extricate themselves from any possible obligations to them. From the opening chapters, Lady Joker feels like two stories. The first is a tale of post-war hardship, told through news reports and letters referring to mass lay-offs at Hinode Beer, a fictional Japanese company whose name is a pun on one of Japan’s major brewers. The second is the story of a rag-tag collection of down-and-out men gathered at a Tokyo racecourse in 1995, partaking in one of the few types of gambling legal in Japan. Both these threads are really about people struggling against their society, the boom times Japan enjoyed forever lost. In both there is also a desire for revenge. One of Japan’s great modern writers, this second half of Lady Joker brings Kaoru Takamura’s breathtaking masterpiece to a gripping conclusion. At the time the letter was received, the company had some concern about the possible ramifications (despite considering it: "incomprehensible in its argument and unclear in its purpose") but took no action.
