Join me in my final annual Christmas season reading. Here is the perfect story for young and not so young alike. Please find my original review here: I think the author needs no introduction. But this little gem of a book proves that the man didn't "just" invent Middle-Earth, the place of epic fantasy. No, he was a man with a great imagination in general.

Lego was a great passion. My child had pirate Lego, Ancient Egyptian Lego, and Star Wars Lego amongst others, but really wanted Roman Lego. For several years, they wrote to Father Christmas, asking for some. Each year, Father Christmas found it harder to come up with a new excuse - especially once said child knew the truth of Father Christmas and presented ever more challenging arguments as to why the elves could surely make it, and that there would be many other enthusiastic recipients. Eventually, Father Christmas said that most Roman things were ruins now, so they could just use regular Lego as ruins! Tolkien was a professor at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford for almost forty years, teaching Old and Middle English, as well as Old Norse and Gothic. His illuminating lectures on works such as the Old English epic poem, Beowulf, illustrate his deep knowledge of ancient languages and at the same time provide new insights into peoples and legends from a remote past. For reading at Christmas it is ideal, and if the children already know the secret, doing it as a family is also something fantastic. Conoscevo questo libro? No, l’ho scoperto grazie ai vostri post. Conoscevo questo scrittore? Si, ma mai letto! Mi sono innamorata di questo libro? SI SI Is your child starting to ask awkward questions about the logistics of Santa during a pandemic? I’ve created a free personalised and printable letter from Father Christmas describing the measures in place to ensure he will still be able to visit – because who’s better placed to explain the magic of Christmas than the big man himself?! Letters from Father Christmas. London: CollinsChildren'sBooks; Boston: Houghton Mifflin. (Facsimiles of letters with envelopes, with three previously unpublished pictures)

The Monsters and the Critics, and Other Essays · Beowulf and the Critics · Tolkien On Fairy-stories · Each letter was hand-written by Tolkien in a shaky script to denote Father Christmas's advanced years, but his drawings were utterly superb. Every year, Father Christmas would try and sort out all the world's presents, but Polar Bear and his friends would upset everything whilst having an enormous amount of fun. As the years went by, more and more characters were added and a whole race of Goblins was brought in to wage war against the beautiful splendour of Father Christmas. That Tolkien had a facility for creating his own stories and universes is well known, and the same could be said for languages. What is less known is his facet as an illustrator, and although he was not very prodigal, he illustrated quite a few of his works at one time or another. So for Christmas, he put all this together and wrote a reply letter from Father Christmas himself to his son. That was in 1920, and until 1943 he continued to send letters to his children. Lowe, Ian (13 January 1994). "Gazette: Diana Caithness". The Independent . Retrieved 22 November 2012. (subscription required) In these letters Nicholas Christmas, his real name, recounted everything that was happening to him from one year to the next, in profusion of details and with many characters. And he also illustrated them, either in the letter itself or as attached images. Here I leave a link to several of those illustrations, although browsing the web there are many more of his best-known works.

Para lectura en navidades es idóneo, y si los niños ya saben el secreto, hacelo en familia también es algo fantástico. Even better, your free printable Santa letters also come in either preschool or school age, for maximum impact with your child! In keeping with the atmosphere of the published work, the introduction evades the issue of the true author of the letters who was of course J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Throughout the period in question, the older children kept the secret as they learned the truth so the younger ones could continue to enjoy the excitement and suspense. Christopher had already begun to have his suspicions — no doubt encouraged by the challenge to his belief in Father Christmas posed by schoolmates — when he came upon a drawing lying on his father’s desk when his father had been called to the telephone. That drawing was the one of the World to be found at the end of the latest edition. The 1939 letter has Father Christmas making reference to the Second World War, [1] while some of the later letters feature Father Christmas' battles against Goblins which were subsequently interpreted as being a reflection of Tolkien's views on the German Menace. [2] Publication [ edit ] La edición que yo tengo en concreto es realmente magnífica: el encuadernado, el papel, la reproducción de los sobres y sellos...todo conforma un ejemplar espectacular.

It was to be the first posthumous publication, and the approach was cautious. The first edition, which appeared in 1976, titled The Father Christmas Letters, was a selection of the letters, some edited and shortened, and included a certain number of the pictures and other visual elements such as stamps and envelopes. Since then the book has been revised several times.A wonderful collection that spreads the Christmas cheer and is a real eye-catcher if you have the print edition. The perfect read for anyone enjoying the holidays and delighting in tales of mischief and the right kind of spirit for this time of year. When the last letter came around in 1943, the year Tolkien's youngest child Priscilla forgot to write to Father Christmas because she no longer believed in him, I cried so so so much. Not only have I put together a letter, I’ve actually created a personalised Santa letter, and I’ve made it in three different designs for you to choose from, ice, red, or holly:The letters themselves were written over a period of over 20 years to entertain Tolkien's children each Christmas. Starting in 1920 when Tolkien's oldest son was aged three, [1] each Christmas Tolkien would write a letter from Father Christmas about his travels and adventures. [3] Each letter was delivered in an envelope, including North Pole stamps and postage marks as designed by Tolkien. The tone and content of the letters changes over time to reflect the children growing up, and Tolkien Father Christmas doesn’t shy away from mentioning the horrors of the world, including war and hunger. The letters incorporate aspects of the children’s lives and things they'd written to him, but there is some continuity in the stories of what FC and his elves etc get up to. Lovely illustrations, too. This latest (and more affordable) edition, like the slipcase “Deluxe Edition” published in 2019 by Harper Collins, contains transcriptions and facsimile pictures of the entire collection of “F.C.” letters, along with their assorted envelopes and stamps so characteristic of Tolkien’s meticulous attention to detail. It also includes an introduction from the book’s editor and Tolkien’s daughter-in-law, Baillie Tolkien, who married Christopher in 1967. Also included is a personal note from the Professor himself, reproduced for the first time. Letters from Father Christmas Deluxe Slipcase Edition published by Harper Collins in October 2019 at an appropriately deluxe price point I won’t lie, though, it took some time to win me over. Don’t get me wrong, I think what Tolkien did for his kids is just wonderful. But I was asking myself initially, why should I read the letters that someone else wrote to his children? Will it be like reading a couple of short stories that I have no connection to, and that were not meant for a wider audience anyway?
