About this deal

Whilst I already knew a lot of detail about the case, this book offers a whole new perspective - that of a child who knew Fred and Rose well before anybody else did. This is a memoir from someone who trusted and most significantly, loved these two people who, to the majority of people, will never seem deserving of it. It's important to note that although I keep referring to Fred and Rose, this book isn't just about those two people - it centres around the family dynamic of the Wests and we get great insight into her relationships with her siblings throughout Mae's life, both before and after her parent's convictions. Reading Mae's writing about her late sister is particularly moving and heart wrenching. Anybody who knows me well knows that I can never resist watching the latest true crime documentary on TV or resist the temptation of scouring over a true crime article. It seems like I'm not alone and as the interest in both solved true crimes and mysteries seems to soar, there are always some cases that you know that almost everybody will have come across at some point. One of these is the infamous case of Fred and Rose West, a couple who abused and killed their acquaintances and their own daughter. From outside, I ask myself, how.... How does this happen and nobody notices for years, no authorities, no teachers, no police.

Mae West and her siblings grew up in a household of abuse and sexual inappropriateness. Her mum, Rose, worked as a prostitute and was violent and her father, Fred, used to openly watch videos of his wife's sessions with her clients in front of the children as well as trying (and sometimes succeeding) to molest them. In 1994, police uncovered the remains 9 young women buried at 25 Cromwell Street. Mae's parents were serial killers.

But what I found more interesting, and something I hadn't gained from A mother’s love is everything. It is what brings a child into this world. It is what molds their entire being. When a mother sees her child in danger, she is literally capable of anything. Mothers have lifted cars off of their children and destroyed entire dynasties. A mother’s love is the strongest energy known to man.” — Jamie McGuire Here is a book that shows you how strong we can be as humans, how a real friend is so important to help you recover, learning to believe in yourself, how we are designed to survive. Be sensitive to generational differences – but don’t put up with prejudice. “Our parents lived in a world with many different constructs,” says Professor Kevin Browne, director of the Centre for Forensic and Family Psychology at Nottingham University. The media reflected behaviour that would quite rightly not be tolerated today – so it’s not surprising, he says, if your mum isn’t as politically correct as you’d like her to be. What’s important is keeping the conversation going – and if you see where she’s coming from, she can hopefully see your point of view as well. Not only did I audibly gasp at this book, but I found myself having to put it down at times before continuing long-reading sessions. There were some things that were so uncomfortable to read, and rightly so - nobody should have to go through what everyone involved went through.

Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes The detail of the story and the very often honesty is what touches me, and you can understand why it took Mae West over 20 years to clear her head mentally to be able to tell this story. Call your mother. Tell her you have her. Remember you’re the only person who knows what her heart sounds like from the inside.”

Don’t moan to her about your siblings. “My sister and I used to have a row, and then we’d each reach for the phone to call our mother,” says a friend. That’s not fair: you’re out of the playpen now. “You’re putting her in an impossible situation,” says Browne. “It creates conflict and conflict creates anxiety, and it’s not fair to make your mother feel anxious.”I’ll love you forever; I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living your baby, I’ll be. Love you mom.” Now Gavin's Auntie Alicia may not be blood related but let me tell you that does not matter one bit! I have been best friend with Alicia for over 10 years (wow!) and I can probably count on one hand the times I have seen her cry, one of them being the day I told her I was pregnant. I still remember it as if it were yesterday, we were in Winners and I kinda just blurted it out and she froze and turned to me with tears in her eyes and just hugged me (this is rare) and from that moment on I knew she loved our baby before she even knew if it was a girl or a boy. Alicia was at the hospital the day Gavin was born, and I'm sure I can speak on behalf of her and say it was love at first sight for her and Gavin. She just held him, staring at him in complete awe. This look of love continued when Alicia would make a point of driving out to our place once a week once gavin was born. She would just hold Gavin and I would be telling her a story and soon realize I was talking to myself because she was lost in awe of Gavin. Now is that love or what? It is a beautiful thing to watch true love first hand.
