About this deal

Van der Kolk defines humans as powerfully resilient and resourceful creatures, able to move beyond the challenging events of our lives and heal. But to do so, men must collaborate, connect, and share our stories, no matter how difficult they may be to tell. That said, remember that not every less-than-perfectly handled moment is evidence that a manager is out of depth. As work advice columnist Alison Green wrote in a Slate article about managing up, “Don’t forget your boss is human: There may be times when she is grouchy, frustrated or frazzled, or times when she would appreciate hearing that she handled something well.” I am on a mission to reclaim and redefine what the phrase “man up” means, so that boys and young men coming of age now can be spared from its wrath. There is a critical mass of men already helping to challenge the outdated model of masculinity (many of which are regular readers and contributors of The Good Men Project), but it’s time for all of us to finally come together and embrace this urgent movement to redefine what it means to be a man. By doing so, we are not only advocating for our own well-being, but also promoting a better, healthier, safer, happier world for all.

He added: “I try not to give the referees too much attention. It’s more about giving them respect and letting them do the game, and concentrating on being there for the players and what they need. One reason people might chafe at the prospect of managing up is because, well, they expect their bosses to be good bosses. But Abbajay has seen plenty of people reach management levels despite suboptimal communication or collaboration skills, including in tech. This review is based on an ARC of Manning Up which I received courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher (West 44 Books).I did get hung up on two points - both of which diluted the storyline for me and made me lose focus on the more important things.

One key reason: what Elliott-McCrea called “the myth of the apolitical engineer.” That’s the tendency among some software engineers to insist upon a “hyper-rational” approach to their work — “letting the work speak for itself” and scoffing at what they perceive to be office politics, which might include managing up. The Man Box robs our sons of a lifetime of opportunities to develop their emotional capacities. Instead, they grow into emotionally isolated men who wall themselves off from the social connectivity central to healing and creating community. The resulting health effects are undeniable.

You have to be good at what you do, but people also have to know that you're good at what you do,” said Abbajay. But then this is her recurring problem: she is good on theories, lamentable on proof. Donor-insemination clinics, for instance, are said to contribute to men's sense of domestic redundancy. Yet how often do single women actually use donated sperm? Hymowitz doesn't say. It is reported that modern women let men know that they "want chocolates on Valentine's Day or, better yet, a weekend in Paris". But do they? That is the cliche; we are just expected to accept it unexamined.
