The front of the charging base is super clean, with a single button to connect the thermometer with your smart device and a tiny led light that can inform you of the charging status of your thermometer. In our opinion, this is too much work and kind of defeats the purpose of grilling. We’d never do this, but it wouldn’t be a complete article without at least giving this technique a mention. You’ll monitor your progress from the app. Your “Now Cooking” screen provides real-time updates of the ambient temperature in my oven, the internal temperature of the bird, elapsed time, and estimated time to reach the target temperature! It also provides a visual that graphs the changes in temperature throughout the process.

You can customize the pre-programmed doneness levels, change the temperature levels, and add your own titles to the cook. The App will save the cooks, and you can access these cooks and settings on later cooking sessions. In the alerts menu, you get two options: a pre-alert and a ready alert. The pre-alert lets you set an alert at whatever temperature you want before reaching your final temperature. Say you want to wrap the meat at a specific temperature, you can use the pre-alert for the wrapping and the final alert for when the meat is done. If you could look at a grill grate under a microscope, you would see pores and a rough, pitted surface. Peanut, sunflower, corn and palm oils have smoking points around 450 °F or 232 °C. Refined canola oil is a good alternative with a smoking point of 400 °F or 204 °C. While with some “cabled probe” wireless thermometers, you need to clamp an ambient thermometer to the grill’s grate and then the probe into the meat. Your journey starts with the hardware. The probe gets inserted as shown below into the base unit. 2 AA batteries are required to charge the probe and to utilize the features of the base. Most cooking sprays use canola oil, a high-temperature vegetable oil. However, they use highly flammable butane, isobutane and propane compressed gases as the propellant. They will make an impressive blow torch should you try and spray while there are flames. It’s dangerous, so don’t do it.Setting a cooking program or an alarm is super simple. For internal temperature alarms, you can set both a final temperature alert and a pre-temp alert which lets you know when your meat is getting close to being finished. This can be super helpful if you're searing steaks in cast-iron skillets or on a grill because the finishing temperature can approach much faster than with smoked meats. With excellent battery life, beautiful app design, and decent wireless range, either of these thermometers will help make your cooking processes more precise and consistent. Thermometer technology, like all tech, continues to grow and improve at an almost exponential rate.
