During the Allies Phase, the Inside Man causes 1 other player to lose their Badge token before making a guess (they can choose themselves)! The Inside Man wins if the Murderer team wins. When the crime takes place, the Murderer chooses 1 Clue card and 1 Means card as the solution to the crime. These will be the “Key Evidence” and “Means of Murder” respectively. In fact, my wife had the same reaction when I asked if she wanted to play. “Murder in Hong Kong” didn’t sound at all appealing. The Accomplice is on the side of the Murderer. They know the Murderer’s identity and the Clue and Means cards relating to the crime. They must help the Murderer to win. They have no way of knowing which is the Murderer and which is the Accomplice and they do not know how the crime was committed.

Witness (1): The witness wins if they or the investigators correctly identify the murder and the evidence and means that prove their guilt. The witness knows which players are playing the murderer and accomplice are but not which role they have. The witness will try to lead the investigators towards these two subtly because if they are caught and killed at the end of the game the murder goes free. SETUP And they must still give any remaining clues by drawing and replacing Scene tiles and replacing Bullet markers. The Murderer tries to hide their role and look for a scapegoat. Even if they are identified, the Murderer still wins the game if no one correctly identifies both the “Key Evidence” and the “Means of Murder”. After the sixth marker is placed and the last piece of evidence has been discussed each player will get the chance to voice their thoughts on certain clues or means. This starts with the player left of the forensic scientist and ends with the person on their right. No one may talk or defend themselves during another players presentation. These will last about 30 seconds but can no longer dependent on what is decided before the game. To start, deal every player four Means and four Clue cards, which should then be laid out, face-up, in front of them.At any point during the investigation phase, a player may attempt to solve the murder. This is done by cashing in your badge token and pointing out a player and a means of murder and an evidence clue. If these are the correct evidence the forensic scientist will say yes, and the game will be over. In this case, though, the game is very simple. What’s more, the Forensic Scientist is keeping tabs on things and, if necessary, can take someone aside to explain any questions they might have without giving away the identity of the other player. When we played Deception with our extended family last weekend, the game play itself also didn’t go over well with some players. Even after playing for a little while, some players just weren’t as engaged as others. It was clear that they weren’t as taken by the game as the rest. to 12-player game: 1 Murderer, 1 Forensic Scientist, 1 Accomplice (optional), 1 Witness (optional), all remaining: Investigators

The set up for Deception is done in three parts. There is the scene set up, the roles, and then badge tokens. Scene The third round is played just like the second round with the Forensic Scientist drawing a new scene tile and replacing an existing one. The Forensic Scientist announces, "Murderer, indicate the 'Key Evidence' and 'Means of Murder.'" The Murderer then points to one of their Clue cards and one of their Means cards. After the placement of the first marker, all players but the Forensic Scientist can freely discuss and express their opinions about the investigation. There’s a real film noir feeling to the game, too, which helps draw out the theme. Just be careful if you’re the murderer, as any self-reflective monologues breaking the third wall might give away the game. How to Play Deception: Murder in Hong Kong Setup After each player has presented their opinions a second time, the Forensic Scientist moves on to the final round of Evidence Collection. To begin, everyone draws a role card, looks at it, and places it face down in front of them. The different role cards in Deception. When I initially read about the deduction part, it sounded quite bland and straightforward. But, in reality, the evidence and scene cards are written in such a wonderful way that conversation and wild deductions can’t help but flow out. Should all players have made an attempt to solve the crime and failed, the Murderer wins. Witness And Accomplice
