In the animated series, Grograman (voiced by Gary Krawford) is a fire lion who burns down Perilin to protect Fantastica from being overrun by its roots and branches. He is later captured by Xayide and freed by Bastian. Bastian Balthazar Bux is a shy and bookish boy, 10 or 11 years old, who is raised by his father and still mourning the sudden death of his mother (she died of an unspecified illness). He is a dreamer, who is shunned by other children due to his immense imagination. During a visit to an antique bookstore, he steals a curious-looking book titled The Neverending Story, and upon reading it finds himself drawn into the story. My children are currently listening to a never-ending audiobook of this all time children's favourite of mine, and I find myself secretly spying on them, listening to bits and pieces of the story, always knowing exactly where they are at the moment, after so many rereadings! Yikka ( Jicha) is a female hinny who acts as Bastian's steed during the second half of the novel. She is quite faithful to him, but under Xayide's influence, Bastian allows her to leave his side to start a family with an attractive male pegasus. In the Hallmark mini-series Tales from the Neverending Story, Gmork is a shapeshifter in the service of Xayide. He also has the ability to travel in between worlds. In fact at the beginning of the series he causes the death of Bastian's mother, under the appearance of red eyed Groenendael (a variety of a Belgian Shepherd). Later on, he assumes the identity of Mr. Blank, a substitute teatcher in Bastian's school. When in Fantasia, Gmork mostly takes on the form of a human with canine features. His role also changes from more menacing at the beginning to that of more comical underling, after being punished by Xayide for his inability to steal the book from Bastian. The book seems to reach the end of the film by about half way through. That first half is cleverly done with a good idea about binding the reader and the adventure together in a 'meta' way that works out really well. The pacing is ok, the imagination great - chaotic, but good.

The movie knew when to stop and the author didn't. His climax is at the end and then there is a whole other half of the book that we don't need. It's terrible. There's supposed to be some lesson in this, but it doesn't work, in my opinion.
