The ACCC tried to stop NSW Ports, which is owned by AustralianSuper and IFM, from receiving compensation if the Port of Newcastle develops a rival container terminal. Sam Mooy Home trade ships were predominantly from Ipswich or Kings Lynn and foreign trade was carried in Dutch or French ships.

Robert Wallis of South Shields is often quoted as the shipbuilder who finally broke this monopoly, but his battle was probably the most public in a series of actions. The Tyne at Newcastle was very narrow and flowed between steep banks with limited space for shipbuilding yards on the riverside. In 1786 all British ships were required by law to register at a Customs port. This was the begining of accurate records regarding place of build, dimensions and ownership of all seagoing vessels. Some freemen therefore opened yards nearer to the mouth of the river, not at Shields but at Howdon instead. You may or may not know this, but Bijoux has featured in Geordie Shore more than a few times and it remains a regular haunt of the cast members, as well as A-list ‘slebs like Ellie Goulding and gorgeous Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe. By 1592, 91,420 tons of coal were exported from the Tyne, coastwise, in that year and in the following year this increased to over 1000,000 tons. To give some idea of how many ships were involved in this trade it is interesting to see an item in the Newcastle Courant for 09/01/1830 which reported that 72 colliers had cleared the Tyne in the previous week. The driving force for shipbuilding was coal. The coastal transportation of coal had its roots in the Middle Ages, if not before.

He argued NSW Ports, which is owned by AustralianSuper and IFM, could have an “effective monopoly” for moving containers in the state for 50 years after the Federal Court dismissed proceedings brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. One of the few party spots in Newcastle to have gained legendary status across the UK and quite possibly the North’s answer to Fabric, The Mushroom is just the place if you’re looking to forget your age, name and quite possibly everything else in the name of good times with mates. You know the nights. The ones where you dance until 3am, grab a kebab on the way home and talk “life” before settling down to a Dave repeat of Top Gear? Oh, to be young again. The introduction of steam tugs on the Tyne, from 1815 onwards was to be of immense value to the sailing ship owners. If the winds were from the north then a trip to London was straightforward and relatively swift but the return journey could be a nightmare. In 1600 the Company of Hostmen was incorporated through a charter granted by Elizabeth I. This gave them exclusive rights to trade coal in the Tyne in return for a one- shilling tax on every chaldron (wagonload) of coal shipped from the Tyne. The charter allowed an exclusive body of electors, in practice the Hostmen, the right to elect the mayor and burgesses of the town. In 1600, 240,000 tons of coal were shipped from the Tyne, 20 times more than the tonnage produced by the Durham coal industry and shipped from the River Wear. Diversify away from coal exports

But by 1730 this was starting to change, with more cargoes being carried in British ships and with an increasing number built on the Tyne. On arrival in South Tyneside it’s just a short walk into town via King Street where the penultimate pub awaits. The Wouldhave is included as the honorary Wetherspoons of the Metro pub crawl, a drinking paradise for students with a culmination of drinks available at affordable prices. 8. Ben Lomond (Jarrow) However all this inventiveness only served to delay the inevitable impact of the competition from the railways.
