Looping length can be set at two, three or five minutes. There’s a time-lapse option with durations of three minutes or two hours between frames, which are rather strange choices. It might have been useful to have a few options in-between. You can turn on a parking mode, where the 512GW will sit in standby mode and record two minutes of video every time it detects physical movement. Remove the 4 small cross-head screws from the corners of the circuit board (keep separately from the above screws, they are different.) In the end I got a replacement battery and swapped it over myself - it was fairly straight forward and the camera is now working correctly. Impressively, Parking Mode is available on all the Series 2 Nextbase dash cams (122-522GW). If you're wondering where the 622GW is in the new range, it doesn't yet exist - so there's no 4K Series 2 dash cam. Not yet anyway, but we've heard that it's on the cards...

A GPS sensor is built-in, so information about location and speed is saved alongside the footage. This then allows the PC software to plot the location of the car on a map, which is a useful extra feature for proving where you were driving and at what speed to an insurer, should an accident happen. The mount includes a mini-USB connector that you can attach to the long car power cable. Unfortunately, this has a non-removable car cigarette light adapter at the other end, so you won’t easily be able to hook up the 512GW and a satnav to automotive power – unless your car has a USB connection and the satnav can make use of this. Plug your Dash Cam in. Ensure the cable is plugged directly into the Dash Cam and NOT via the mount. Alternatively, it’s possible to record Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 60fps. You can also choose Full HD and 720p at 30fps. At the top resolution, video is captured at 27Mbits/sec, so a 16GB memory card will be enough for 77 minutes of footage before the recoding loops to replace the oldest files with new ones. As usual, there’s microSD for storage, but none is supplied in the box – which is a shame for a dash cam that is well out of the budget territory. In short, that means you can connect a Rear View or Cabin View camera to the body of the main dash cam unit. This means that the 322GW, 422GW and 522GW can be made into dual dash cams. The neodymium magnetic attachment is exceptionally strong, too, so your dash cam should never detach from the windscreen and none of the footage we captured is shaky. The magnetic mount attachment also makes clipping the dash cam onto the mount much less fiddly than before. However, taking the 25% SureThing! insurance discount into account, and the fact that many insurers now want GPS, time and speed stamping on submitted footage - the 522GW is a very smart option.

On the Dash Cam's screen you'll see a menu of 3 options. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. The 512GW (GPS WiFi) offers high-resolution video quality and a built-in WiFi system for easily accessing video clips on a smartphone. It has a Sony image sensor that promises clarity, stronger colours and better night time image quality. Plus it has the benefit of a polarising filter and six-layer glass lens for reduced glare and sharper video. Maximum resolution is 1440p at 30fps, but it will also shoot in 1080p at a faster 60fps. Navigating through the various settings menus is simple since everything on-screen is clearly labelled. There are plenty of things to adjust, including settings for the frame rate and resolution, as well as switching audio recording on and off or setting a number plate for the camera car. Only dash cam to have innovative polarising filter to completely remove windscreen glare and reflections.
