Second time around I wasn’t able to breastfeed anyway so it was bottles all the way. I couldn’t believe how free I felt, being able to leave the house and leave someone else do the feed! It just never occurred to me to have done that sooner! Probably the most established brand for breastfeeding mothers, Medela’s iconic Swing design has remained unchanged since it was first launched in the 1960s. It’s a design classic that’s also brilliantly functional. The pump is easy to use – there are no small parts to fiddle around with, which is brilliant, as it's always a bit daunting putting little pieces of your breast pump in the dishwasher or trying to hand wash every nook and cranny of a tiny valve. Our First Look tester had no issues expressing with the pump. Rachel Carpenter: The only downside to this breast pump in comparison to the other I am using is the number of components which make it up and the fact it does take a little time to take it apart to clean and sterilise (which I do after every use). The only other thing is when the bottle is only partially full it's quite unstable - perhaps a weighted base would hold it more steadily? On the whole though the positives far outweigh the negatives! Electric breast pumps include hospital-grade models, double breast pumps and some newer, more revolutionary designs. Our favourite Elvie alternative is technically still an Elvie product, but if you can’t afford the battery-powered model, try the Elvie Curve instead. It’s the latest breastfeeding product from the brand and launched alongside the Elvie Catch. Neither comes with the bells and whistles of the classic model, but they also don’t come with the high price tag. Jennifer: This has been my favourite breast pump so far and I have used a few. When I received it, it was really easy to assemble and really straight forward to use. I can pump around 6oz in the 30 minute timer where I could only pump around 2oz in other pumps I have used. It has made expressing very easy and also very comfortable as you can find the right suction which works for you. It has so many settings to suit your personal needs, there are the stimulation and expressing modes, with several levels on each, I used level 2, but it goes up to 9. I can't imagine anyone would need to go that high. I love that you express straight into the bottles, I was managing 4-5 oz in 15-20 minutes (one breast) and this was when my baby was only a few weeks old, so if I had carried on (I only managed to breast feed for 4 weeks as my baby just wouldn't latch, and I was not established enough to solely express, plus only one breast was producing milk, so was forced to stop) i'm sure I could have got much more.
The verdict (for now)
As well as evaluating ease of assembly and comfort in use, we take note of each pump’s suction power and efficiency at expressing milk, alongside with how easy it is to clean. Finally, you’ll find all of the key specifications you need to know, including the type of pump (double or single), whether it’s a closed or open system, and its weight. Still, as much as I have that freedom compared to last time, I am still restricted with any sort of me time I should want or need. That is where a breast pump comes in! 🙂 I am working with Nûby to test out their products and they very kindly sent me everything I needed to start expressing. I have used it all a few times now and made great use of the time on my own! The pump has two settings – stimulation and expression. The first gives a tingling sensation and stimulates milk production. Once milk starts to flow you can switch to expression mode and keep going until you have enough. I always express after Wills has finished feeding so it doesn’t take much to stimulate before the milk flows steadily. If you often find yourself needing to pump on the go, or at work, Medela’s new Harmony Flex Manual is a great choice. Despite its sturdy build quality, it weighs only 105 grams and is much easier to carry around than an electric pump.

Parents are impressed with how Medela's Freestyle pump cuts their expressing time down to a fraction of what it was (according to Medela, a leader in the field, you can get 18 per cent more breast milk using this pump than with single expressing).For the occasional pump if you need to leave your baby with a relative or friend as a one-off, a manual pump will likely suffice.
