About this deal

Plotting and pacing: This is a strong aspect of the novel. It’s a pacey read, with plenty going on in poor Marlon’s life. There’s the whole ‘Mr Orange’ mystery, but there’s also plenty of conflict and mess in his family life too. I enjoyed the thread about his Dad, and the way this was linked in through music – I think that’s a key way a lot of people relate through the generations, which isn’t always noted, so it was nice to see it brought out here.

Flood, Alison (25 May 2021). It had its strong points, and it covers subject matter which is probably of interest to many teens, but I didn't enjoy reading it at all. I had to drag myself through it, and even the suspenseful elements didn't drive me through the plot. Also, it felt overlong - and the narrative jumped and 'jived' (lots of street lingo) in a way that meant I couldn't just skim it. Having said all that: it was the YA Book Prize winner for 2017, and I respect that I was probably just not the right reader for this book. Every Pet needs to eat to relinquish their Hunger, which increases by 0.03% every second (maximum hunger reached in 3333 seconds or roughly 1 hour). At 30% Hunger, Pets become hungry and the Hunger icon will appear above their head to notify the crew that they need feeding. The player can feed them by dropping an appropriate food item on the ground and the tamed Creature will approach and consume it immediately. It stops requiring food when Hunger is below 30%. Patrice was born in Brighton, raised in an Italian-Trinidadian family in mid-Sussex, and now lives on the South Coast.Narrative style: The first person narration really helps to ‘get inside’ Marlon’s way of thinking, so it’s easy to understand why he does things, even when you can see (as an outsider) that he’s making the wrong choice.
