Description

I am always keeping an eye out for the latest and greatest coding games and best coding apps for kids. Some of you may remember the review I did a while ago on Osmo’s Coding Jam. Well, Osmo has other coding activities out there, like Osmo Coding Awbie, and it is just as wonderful and educational. What is Coding Awbie? But because of the way the stand and the camera attachment works, the Osmo only works when the ipad is out of a case. We always keep my husband’s ipad in an Otterbox case to keep it safe. It has protected it from many, many drops over the years. So it makes me a little nervous to have the boys playing with the ipad without the case on.

Beyond enabling kids to remain equipped to face the digital world, why is teaching kids to code so important? Here are a few reasons why: The drawing app was okay (one of my boys enjoyed playing it once). But I didn’t love that it just involved staring at the screen, and didn’t involve a ton of creativity.

Osmo teaches logic skills and problem-solving. It also helps kids succeed in an increasingly digital world. It is aimed at children aged between 5 and 12 years old, and can only be played on an Ipad or iPhone.

Access to the other apps that don’t require extra pieces – like the Drawing app and the Newton app. Algorithms are seen throughout the game. Game-players are asked to give Awbie instructions and directions to help him get through his environment. Each time the player pushes the “Play” button, they are “Programming” different algorithms for Awbie to complete. Ask your child to assign a “code” to each letter of the alphabet. It could be an image, a punctuation mark, a symbol, etc! Once they’ve created their own code, ask them to write a secret letter to someone in their code. Trust us, this can be a lot of fun!• Mouse & Cheese – Top Coding Games for Kids I was really impressed with how well-made and durable all the Osmo parts are. While we teach our boys to treat what we own carefully, I love when something is durable and feels like it will actually hold up to normal wear and tear. Update: 6 years later, and it’s still going strong! The arrows can also change direction just by gently turning them in the direction you would like them to go.

We also love their newer drawing apps. We haven’t tried it yet, but another on our list to try soon is one of their math add-ons, Secrets of Dragons, for older kids here. Coding Awbie uses a levels-based game to teach kids how to make use of Algorithms, Sequences, and Decomposition. Help two lovable characters Awbie and Mo to overcome brain-stretching challenges through code! Learn collaboration and teamwork, computational thinking, and more. Why is Coding Important for Kids?
