The Philips Avance HR1922 isn’t cheap, but it has several clever touches that make it stand out from the competition. If you care about appearance and storage, or easy cleaning, you’d be hard-pushed to find anything better. I have used many different juicers over the years and to a unit, they have either disappointed in terms of performance or failed due to craftsmenship. All the removable parts are dishwasher-safe – and they’re equally easy to clean by hand. This includes the micro-sieve, which is relatively small.

It may seem a little obvious, but a slow juicer is exactly what its name suggests. It is a special form of juice press which slowly cuts fruit and veg into small pieces and squeezes all of the juice from them. The Philips slow juicers not only squeeze the fruit but also extract juice from the fruit pulp. This proved slightly better, resulting in double the yield, but there was still an episode of wobbling. In fact, I had to turn the machine off and on again before it settled. As recommended in the instructions, I alternated juicing leafy greens with hard fruits, processing apples in-between. Although the resulting juice was clear of any kale stalks, I found some apple peel in there – a further sign of the disturbance caused. To test the difference between the two speed settings, I decided to juice a similar amount of apple and carrot. It became apparent that setting 2 yielded significantly more juice, also producing more substantial froth.Without the right supporting literature, it can be easy to lose interest in a new kitchen gadget, but the Avance has that covered. Next I juiced two medium-sized Granny Smith apples, which yielded 150ml of juice, with a little bit a pulp. This is a relatively standard result. Storage is fantastic, the electrical wire wraps nicely and neatly into a channel in the base of the juice, effectively hiding it and all the containers fit neatly into each other, meaning no stray pieces to also find homes for when storing. Another slow juicer benefit is that the exact function of a slow juicer is designed to resemble the chewing motion of the human mouth. The mouth is very effective at extracting nutrients because it “pre-digests” food, which makes it easier for the body to absorb and metabolize nutrients during the rest of the digestive process. Interestingly, the two speed settings available here don’t apply to different types of fruit and veg. Instead, setting “1” gives you clear juice, while the slightly noisier and more powerful setting “2” offers juice with up to 50% extra fibre.

Six medium carrots on setting “2” yielded 400ml of juice, while two Granny Smith apples added just under 160ml. An additional advantage of a slow juicer is that you can put whole fruit into the machine. The juicer will extract the juice directly into the container. The pomace (skins, pulp, seeds, and stems) goes to a separate container. While I was busy admiring the compact design and the little details that the Avance HR1922 gets right (the drip-stop spout, the cord storage, the spotless clean-up – I can go on), it also managed to deliver some outstanding juice. Setting up this juicer, I wondered how much it could fit. The answer is more than enough. At 2.1 litres, the pulp container isn’t the biggest on the market, but it’s plenty big enough, with Philips claiming you can juice up to 3 litres before having to empty it. If anything, you’ll have to get another jug first, since the standard jug can accommodate only 1 litre of juice. I started by making the ‘Green Eyecatcher’ with cucumber, spinach, water and honey. The feed tube was quite narrow, so the cucumber had to be halved to fit in the chute; even then, pushing it through required some effort. It produced a good amount of juice and minimal, relatively dry pulp. Similarly, the spinach went through well, leaving little residue inside the juicing unit – although this may have been a result of the water washing it through to finish.Three medium carrots produced a somewhat disappointing 100ml of juice. While the juice was clear, with no extra pulp, the carrot pulp in the bin was still moist enough for me to use in a carrot cake. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water.
