The most important thing to note is that the Pixel 6 is the very first handset to be powered by Google’s in-house Tensor chipset. Ditching Qualcomm and avoiding Exynos and Kirin, Tensor promises a handful of performance and efficiency improvements over last year’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G, and it represents a bold new future for Google. We managed to recharge the Pixel 6 to a respectable 47% in 30 minutes – the phone maxes out at 30W of charging via the company’s 30W USB-C charger, which is an optional extra you’ll have to pay for. In testing, we achieved a little over 80% charge in an hour.

The Pixel 6’s new “Face Unblur” feature also works tremendously well. When it detects a face in the frame while shooting in portrait mode, the ultrawide camera captures an image with a faster shutter speed than the primary lens as soon as you press the button. The Pixel 6’s other key specs are respectable, with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Excessively noisy low-light photos from the primary camera are a rarity, and in good light, a deft photographer could easily get frame-worthy photos out of this thing.

The phone was the first to launch with Android 12 out of the box, and there are plenty of new features to discover. Most of these upgrades are incremental or not too noticeable, but some are huge. Call quality is excellent. All of our test calls were clear and noise cancellation worked without fail. The in-display speaker tops out at 84dB and is loud enough to hear on a busy street. The stereo speakers on the Pixel 6 are excellent, with a maximum volume of 90dB. They’re loud enough to fill a room and produce an impressive soundstage with mellow timbre. Google's Tensor Chip Isn't About Benchmark Scores There’s glass at the front and rear, which is quite a departure from the recent plastic-bodied Pixel phones, and both panels are constructed from Corning’s toughest phone glass yet: Gorilla Glass Victus. There’s also IP68 dust and water resistance, as well as an optical under-screen fingerprint reader in a change from the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor of recent Pixels. Overall, the Google Pixel 6 isn’t as curved as the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5-series phones, with its more straight edges and less-rounded corners resulting in a look that’s not wholly dissimilar to the Sony Xperia 1 III. It does feel a bit wider, though, which may lead users to fumble it when handling the phone; it isn’t really suited for one-handed use. However, where it excels is for watching media – and listening to it. We loved the Pixel 4’s speakers, and we’re continued fans of the Pixel 6’s audio, which sounds evenly balanced among highs and lows. Other handsets have uneven splits between their dual speakers (typically around the earpiece and next to the power port), with treble or bass favoring one or the other; but the Pixel 6 feels much more even, with its two speakers delivering a more even mix.

Camera: Major upgrades from previous Pixels

Of course, for non-exclusive features there are now plenty of other phones with Android 12 too, but the Pixel 6 is sure to get Android 13 on day one as well, so it will maintain its software lead over most rivals. Comparing the Google Tensor processor with the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform is difficult. Google created the Tensor SoC to realize experiences for Pixel devices that would otherwise be impossible or cumbersome. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888,on the other hand, was developed as a turnkey solution for smartphone manufacturers; it provides plenty of power, but the manufacturer has to figure out exactly how to create experiences within the limitations of the platform. Other improvements within Android 12 include changes to widget settings, a one-handed mode and a new AppSearch feature. This allows you to search for stuff within an app in the phone’s settings menu, rather than launching the app itself. The Pixel 6 supports fast charging up to 30W – and while a USB-C to USB-C cable is included in the box, there’s no plug adapter. It appears Google has joined other phone makers in the war on e-waste, so you’ll need to source one yourself. A 4,614mAh battery powers the Pixel 6. In our early battery drain tests, where we stream HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone averaged 23 hours and 11 minutes before shutting down. During a week of regular use, we only needed to charge the phone twice and didn't notice any battery depletion when there wasn't any use. The Pixel 6 supports 30W fast charging via USB-PD 3.0 and compatible third-party adapters. Qi wireless charging maxes out at 12W, but the upcoming Pixel Stand 2 supports fast charging at up to 21W. The Pixel 6 also includes a 8-megapixel front-facing camera, in a punch-hole at the center-top of the display, which has an 84-degree field of view and f/2.0 aperture.

Whether that matters is another question: like the Samsung phones mentioned above, the Pixel 6 breezes through browsing, watching media, and other tasks, without a hitch. Those scores are also notably higher than that of the Google Pixel 5, which, with its Snapdragon 765G chipset, got a Geekbench 5 score of 1600. The Google Pixel 6’s specs were another great mystery: just how good would the Google-designed Tensor chipset be? While benchmarks don’t see the phone outperforming any leading flagships to any great extent, the phone does have enough power to run smoothly and take great photos. We tested the Pixel 6 on Verizon’s 5G network in Chicago and recorded admirable speeds, averaging 168Mbps down and 78Mbps up. It’s really quite effective at removing stuff, too. In the below examples, I’ve removed both a lamppost and a skyscraper, and while it’s not completely seamless – you can see some clues where they’ve been deleted – the Pixel 6 got rid of what I wanted rather well.
