Description

The boning of choice for couture houses from the golden age, right up to the present day (and I supply many of them with steel boning, never plastic), is steel. Why? Steel boning is more widely available than decent plastic boning and it is much more flexible for curvy areas such as over the bust. Also, steel does not degrade in the same way that plastic does over time, and what I mean by this is that spiral steel retains it's original properties for a very long time, plastic does not. So although we all know that once plastic is made, it can never be 'unmade', the properties which made it useful when new, will degrade over a relatively short period of time. Therefore, apart from the other environmental considerations, plastic boning will not produce an heirloom garment. Rigilene has its uses but is no good for serious dress foundations because it wont stand up to the job. Lets look at why that is and why infact, steel boning is the boning of choice for couturiers.

all of our wear tests have passed with no issue, but we haven't personally had the opportunity to put this product through a year+ long Broadway run or similar

Starting with the middle seam, sew a seam on either side of the seam line, as close to the line as possible. When sewing these first seams, be sure to proceed slowly, ensuring that each portion is properly aligned. You might think that a fitted bodice will stay up by itself, because it’s fitted. But that’s not quite true.

While you can add straps to each of these four designs to prevent them from collapsing, another solution is to insert boning. For example, whalebone is perhaps the most rigid and well-known boning method of the era. Despite its name, it’s not made out of actual bone, but of keratin, which is the same material that makes up our nails. Like our nails, it becomes more pliable under heat and moisture. When placed inside corsets (which are right beside warm skin), this material naturally follows the shape of the body, regardless of the wearer’s body type. When deciding on how many seams your bodice will have, take into account that each of the seams will give you the possibility to insert boning. However, you can add more channels also in between the seams. You really need to try these bones to believe how versatile they are. Woven boning like "rigelene" is not a good boning for corsets, but it is a remarkable product for creating 3 dimensional shapes like "cages" and it is stronger than many of the woven bones on the market. It's appropriate for making under-structures to support Fosshape or other materials. Use if for children's costumes and bodices and one of it's great characteristics is that it can be sewn through easily.

About this product

For engineers and manufacturers, adhesives have provided the solution when it comes to bonding plastics. With the wide range of adhesives available, it can be challenging to find the right one for bonding plastics. Available in six widths 5mm. 6mm, 7mm, 10mm, 12mm and 13mm. Offers very reasonable cost saving when compared to other boning. Rigilene boning is too thin and flimsy to support a functional dress foundation and it will not stand up to the job However, for those who want to develop corsets that last, it’s best to choose steel boning. Steel boning may be available in both rigid and spiral boning. Both have their uses; spiral boning is often for curved seams, while rigid boning is for straight seams. However, spiral boning will work well for any type of seam.

Cotton Corset Lacing (continuous)

Creating the trapeze silhouette for Dior, Saint Laurent has a rigid understructure veiled under a fly-away cage. A boned corset anchors the dress but allows the delusion of a free swinging cone" Of course, in the modern-day, corsets are made for aesthetic rather than utilitarian purposes. Their quirky and whimsical appearance is perfect as both formal and casual wear, making them a great project for sewing enthusiasts. How to Make a Corset Metal boning is undisputedly the go-to choice for couture houses to use in their dress foundations.

Connect the panels. Sew the panels, beginning from the center panel and going outward. Clip the seams as necessary, and iron flat. You will need to iron out all the wrinkles, so that the outer and inner pieces line up with each other. For applications that require a fast cure, you may want to consider cyanoacrylate adhesives. UV adhesives can be used for applications that require more time for example, where components need to be accurately aligned. However, many plastic bonding UV adhesives cure with normal room lighting which means parts will need to be shielded. Ultimately this is a matter of personal preference and intended use. Feel free to ask us if you're not sure which is right for you! And if you're sewing your own stays with our patterns, you can easily substitute 6mm synthetic whalebone in place of 1/4" steels. Interestingly, as scholars research and analyze the techniques of master coutiriers, it is often forgotten that the couturier is a master because they abide by no rules but are so confident with the art of sewing and cutting, that decisions are made depending on need not formula. Sewing after all is simply a series of seams, some straight, some curved. The crucial part is that the stitcher must become profient at doing them" Steel has long been considered the go-to boning material for most "modern" and "theatrical" corsetry, and it's a commonly held opinion in the historical costuming world as well.

Synthetic Whalebone (German Boning) -6 sizes

Quite tough and kink resistant. Washable and dry cleanable, has passed the Oddy test so suitable for use in museum collections. As a result, plastic surfaces should be cleaned, degreased, and sometimes mechanically or chemically pre-treated before an attempt at bonding. For Victorian corsets, it allows us to copy the numerous lines of bones seen on extants, again without adding the weight of steel. And, because we can melt holes in it, we can copy the historical flossing patterns which go through bones.
