The spirit has been produced in the region, in one form or another, nigh on a thousand years, and today Poland still very much falls within the so-called “Vodka Belt”. Gin is a condensed version of the ancient English term genever, which is connected to the French words genièvre and jenever. All stem from juniperus, the Latin word for juniper. Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. There are four main styles of gin. London dry gin is very dry with a strong juniper taste. Plymouth Gin is fruity and aromatic, Old Tom gin is sweeter and smoother than London dry gin. New Western, also called new American gin, new world gin, or international gin, is a gin where the juniper taste is less prominent and calls for an expanded cast of botanicals to make the blend. Genever, a Dutch variation that is the origin of all other gins, is sweet when aged and drier and lighter when young. Spoon the stewed fruit into a sieve and force the skins and pulp through the mesh using a wooden spoon. This isolates the stones, which are then thrown away. Put the pulp and syrup into a large jar. Rinse out the oven dish and then sieve the last bits of the fruit with some of the gin to make sure that none of the fruit mixture is wasted. STEP 4: Adding the gin While it’s no surprise gin is so popular, it’s reputation will go down notoriously in history as mother’s ruin and the beginning of mild alcoholism that has cursed the English since it’s conception. But we have the power to change that and have been for a while. By exploring the possibilities gin has to offer we can continue the legacy of a drink with an attitude. Gin, the medicine turned rebel is leaving it’s awkward adolescent stage and becoming a true adventurer. When we celebrate the urge to find the answers and seek to satisfy our ravenous spirit, we can finally drink life to the lees, well in this case, the trees. Juniper to be specific. Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage whose main flavour comes from juniper berries (Juniperus communis).

The primary three ingredients used in the majority of gins are juniper, coriander and angelica. Even though these are the most popular, there are hundreds of flowers, roots, fruits, berries and nuts that are used to create a palate for each gin that makes it distinctive. This can include some very localized or exotic ingredients. There is even an ingredient in Polish gin called “horny goat weed”… we kid you not. While many of your favorite gins likely come from England, America’s distilling scene is having a gin moment. Homegrown producers are re-envisioning London dry and Old Tom gin with an American lean, highlighting locally sourced, all-American botanicals. Case in point: Gray Whale Gin, a California-based gin brand that sources ingredients from the West Coast, including Baja limes, Sonoma fir, wild-foraged sea kelp from the shores of Mendocino, and almonds from Central California. By the 1600s vodka was hugely popular (it’s no accident that its name comes from “woda”– the Polish word for water), and ensuing centuries saw the introduction of potatoes, as well as commercial distilleries, begin to change the nature of the spirit.
