About this deal

No, actually, it’s far worse, and I’m a little embarrassed to tell you. But I think negative feelings should be released. Just once, right? So just to set the record straight from our last argument, Kylo Ren is NOT a baby. You understand? He’s young, impulsive, and he’s related to Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Of course he whines! How is this a surprise? And he’ll redeem himself. I’ll bet you on it. Name your price.

There is just something meaty about her characters and her writing that make her books oh so chomp-able. In the "Note From the Author" section at the end of the book, Douglas says something that I think is worth sharing: I laugh at her Princess Bride movie reference. She’s been saying that for seven years. The first year, we were required to write each other as part of a fifth grade project, pairing students in her class with students in mine. This is my second book by Penelope Douglas. The first I've read from her was CORRUPT, and that was lent to me by a kind GR friend via Kindle. I thought CORRUPT was okay, with reservations. I don't normally go in for erotica, especially erotica that reads like straight-up porn. All the men in that book were misogynistic and rapey, too, which added another level of nope. But the plot was decent and she was good at setting a decent pace, so I sort of half-enjoyed, half-wtf'd my way through the thing and at the end of the book, I wasn't mad. It was a flawed but decent read. I'm sure we would all act differently as teenagers - care about certain things less and other things more - if we knew then what we know now, as they say, no? Okay, sorry. I just had a Facebook break, so I feel better now. Not sure when I turned into such an idiot, but I’m glad you put up with it. You have every right to be angry. I’m incredibly sorry that I couldn’t get a handle on how to fix the problems, but I really did try, and I will try again. In time. I haven’t given up. I know the story is there.

I know it’s hard to write female characters. Usually, the girls are judged harshly. If they’re weak, they’re the weak princess waiting for her prince to save her, a bad-developed character. If they’re too strong, they’re unrealistic, a tomboy that hates feminine stuff and thinks tears are bad. I GET IT. But in this case, there’s nothing that helps Ryen’s case. She’s one of those shallow popular girl stereotypes that we love to hate. And instead of breaking this stereotype, she just makes it worse! She sometimes says “I know I shouldn’t be like this but I don’t like to not fit in.” We have a small pinch of hope that she’ll get some self-reflection but she just shrugs it off and keeps being terrible. When the book starts and they’re in a party with a band, marijuana, alcohol, cool guys, I thought, wow, cool! And then, the next day, THEY ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL! NOOOOOOOOO!But I’ve forced books before and they flop every time. It’s not worth it. Readers always know when an author wasn’t connecting. Masen grapples with his feelings for Ryen and the reasons he’s at the school. He’s torn between his mission and his growing attraction to her. He’s also haunted by memories of his sister, Annie, and the life he left behind. like you. Go ahead and try to deny it. I know you don’t have to sit there with your sister, man. She’s old enough to watch TV by herself. I gnaw at her mouth in short, gentle nibbles. I love her lips, and the light sweat I can taste on her skin. A door closing sounds from out in the hall, and I gather her family is starting to wake up. My eyelids are suddenly heavy, and I breathe hard, trying to come down. I better get out of here. Looking down, I see her face resting on the bed, her eyes closed, looking very content. I slip my hand between her and the bed and squeeze her breast, placing one last kiss on her cheek. “Thanks, Pom Poms. I’ll see you at school.” She makes a little growl in her throat, but her eyes remain closed, and I laugh to myself as I clean up and get dressed.
