I remember in some past discussions on F:AT about alternative cards...that would be useful, I think, if there would be any tweaks or home rules. At the end of each race the prize winnings are handed out, so players can then use the money accrued to place their bets for the next race. Players can choose not to bet if they’re short of money, in which case they would have to race for the prize money. The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game - Wikipedia

The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is a competitive betting game for 2-6 players. The player that wins the most money over the course of the six rounds, each round consisting of a single race, is the winner, and money can be earned either by a player’s horse finishing among the top three at the end of the race, or by placing a bet on the winning horse. At the beginning of each race the players must decide whether to bet on their own horse or another. Someone will need to be chosen as the bookmaker as they will need to take control of the game. We each threw the dice and whoever scored the highest became the bookmaker.

I finally got to play this game yesterday on my daughter's birthday. She's into horses (what little girl isn't) and loves horse racing games. She's liked playing Winner's Circle in the past with her friends when they came over. She'd had this for awhile, but she hadn't read the rules...so I did it with her (after Barnes' latest Gameshark mentioned it again)

The game essentially takes the skulduggery and cheating that goes on in real life horse races and applies it to a board game, making for an interesting and often bad-tempered experience for the players. How to be Nasty Remember, be cagey, cunning, whatever it takes to make sure you and your horse wins. You will need your wit about you as you will need to work out the odds when placing your bets too. Despite (or because of?) the simple mechanics, the races are quite fun, with the possibility of card play adding a bit of needle. There's bound to be one person who will act as commentator, too. Winning races brings in some useful money, but it's winning the bets that really makes the difference - especially if you can get a winner at really long odds. This means that there's quite a strong bluff element, as players will not necessarily have bet on their own horse. Whilst the age range is 12 and over, I suggest being mindful at just how nasty, conniving, deceitful etc. people may get playing this game and if you are worried about upsetting any children playing, then you might not want the to join in. If like us, we did play with the grandchildren but did not play the nasty side of our strategies and was far less cunning. We wanted to the children to enjoy the game have some fun but also teach them about game plans and strategies without being too nasty or conniving. How the horses are moved and dependant on what you throw on the dice, throw a 1, the horse moves 1 length, throw a 2, the horse moves 2 lengths forward, this is the same if a 3, 4, 5 or 6 is thrown.

Do you want your horse to win, if not, what strategies do you put in place? Do you make your horse fall over or, was you not happy with how the race went and demanded a restart? The game is played over the course of six races. Players have to rank their horses for each race, based on how well they want to perform. At the start of each race lane cards are drawn at random and odds for the horses are determined. Players then bet on the horse they think will win based on the odds. Therefore, a player may decide to bet on a horse which is not their own, if they feel it has better chances, or would win them more money.

The box makes it clear that this is for older children (age 12 up) and adults only, but it can be played in teams and so can be played from 2 players to 6 teams. This game is more fun than Winner's Circle (by quite a bit) and even Long Shot (which I like...but takes too long). For most destinations there is the option to select an express delivery service instead of the standard delivery. It does come down to rolling well, but there is plenty of tension and plenty to do to complicate things for others or to help yourself. We haven't even played that often, but this game is a gem. Conjure up your most devious plan as your main goal and objective is to win as much money as you can at the races and the good thing about this, there are a couple of ways to do this. There are things to watch: long shots can pay off hugely and if someone bets high they can really get ahead - you have to keep in mind which race is being run for how much prize money, who has how much funds they are likely to bet and trying to stop them if you can. I'm not sure that a runaway leader can be stopped once they pull off a huge bet. But they call it a long shot for a reason.
