Sometimes I forget just how good Chris Ware is. This is an incredible work—something like a Paul Thomas Anderson ensemble movie ( Boogie Nights or Magnolia) set in a Catholic school in Omaha in the 1970s. Rusty Brown is both more restrained and less fussy than Ware’s other work. He relies more on his storytelling and characters to do the heavy lifting rather than on flashy layouts or unusual book design. Ware is well known for his expansive, introspective, depth-plumbing works of graphic fiction, and his latest, featuring a series of interconnected, decade-spanning narratives spiraling outward from an Omaha school, is no different . . . There are only brief moments of warmth and affection, but the wider picture, depicting a complex matrix of aching loneliness; long-simmering, acidic resentment; and a desperation for human connection and fulfillment, is rich with pathos and powerfully stirring.” — Booklist (starred)

Also, this middle-aged man had quite a few problems reading the smaller text at times. You might want a magnifying glass. Joanne Cole" is told in a fragmentary style similar to the approach Ware takes in "Jordan Lint." The narrative moves forward, punctuated by Joanne's memories of her childhood. We see her growing up very poor, taking care of her younger sister, and working with her mother to clean the Lint home. The third narrative is about the life and death of school bully Jason Lint. Out of the four segments, this was my personal favourite. Although the most tragic of the lot, it also gives good insight problems in youth can still be carried well into adulthood. As this story goes well into the 00’s it gives a good glimpse at what happens to the other characters in the book ( I also think that in volume two we’ll have more insight to Rusty and Chalky) An Answer to the Insoluble Dilemma of Mr. Chris Ware, by the World Renowned Critic, Dilettante, and Bon Vivant Tegan O’Neil . . . Why does every ‘great book’ have to always be about criminals or perverts? Can’t I just find one that’s about regular people living everyday life?”—a character in Jimmy Corrigan

Rusty Brown (Electric Mary) - The Rockpit INTERVIEW: Rusty Brown (Electric Mary) - The Rockpit

As a young man, he rode bulls in rodeos all around the Western states while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. The nation was at peace, so Rusty saw more action in the rodeo arena on weekends than he did while in uniform. By 1956, Rusty was the Arizona State Bull Riding Champion, he won more than 100 other trophies, the majority as a bull rider. He returned to the rodeo in the late 1960’s to work as a rodeo clown.

Mark: Great guitarist and they had Alex Kane too on that tour who still owes me an interview! Chip’s actually playing bass with The Quireboys on their American Tour at the minute. Mark: I didn’t know that I was thinking more of the fact that even now with things opening up a positive test within the band could mean tour dates postponed or cancelled. A great event to get things started again. Of course, said charismatic con man was elected President almost forty years ago. There’s nothing new under the sun, not when it’s morning in America.
