RAM options range from 8GB to 12GB, while storage ranges from 128GB to 1TB. The base RAM level is a little lower than the S21 Ultra, but Samsung says this is negated by improved virtual RAM options. My review sample is the 12GB/256GB Exynos model, so I can’t comment on the performance of the 8GB RAM variant or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model.
This is also a gorgeous and quite powerful gaming phone, and handled my Asphalt 9 race through Barcelona without a single hiccup.There are a number of other battery saver modes too, each with a vast array of customisations like throttling performance, turning off 5G and automatically lowering the screen resolution. Play around with these and you’ll find the best mix of performance and longevity to suit your needs. Part of this has to do with the stabilization, which at 100x, basically takes control of the lens and holds a subject (like the moon) in the frame. It can feel a little like you’re no longer in control of the lens, but it does do a good job of countering your shaky hands.
Samsung is also strengthening its partnership with Microsoft, and we had no trouble adding our Microsoft account, which includes OneDrive and the Office Suite. It was also easy to connect the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to our Windows 11 PC.
Aside from looking vivid and bright, the Dynamic OLED screen has a new feature called Vision Booster. Samsung says this pushes up detail and contrast in brighter situations, making it easier to see video content. This is certainly an interesting addition for those who watch a lot of Netflix shows in sunny environments, though considering it’s very dreary here in the UK it’s not something I could utilise much. Xclipse is also one of the first mobile GPUs to support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Simply put, this is an advanced method of simulating the way in which light travels around the environment, with more realistic reflections and shadows rendered in real time. However, while this might look pretty great, as we’ve seen with full-fat games consoles and desktop graphics cards, there’s a strong chance that this feature will have a negative impact on frame rate. And sadly, you’ll be charging the S22 Ultra more frequently than the previous model, too. Running for a total of 19hrs 41mins in our video test at native resolution – which is still very good, mind you – the S21 Ultra outperformed the 2022 model by over three hours in the same conditions. Dropping the resolution down to FHD+ didn’t help much, either. The S Pen is also a solid productivity tool. We scrawled some notes in Samsung Notes and then let the system convert the scribbles to real text. It didn’t miss a word.
