The ‘FE’ moniker here stands for ‘Fan Edition’ and it’s very much a cheaper, mid-year update for the brand’s flagship Galaxy S20 – with a bit of the Note 20’s DNA thrown in for good measure. It looks like it will continue to be sold alongside the Samsung Galaxy S21 in many regions. Samsung sent us the 5G variant of the S20 FE for this review, which means we can finally judge whether or not non-UK Samsung owners have been getting the better end of the deal until now. In our battery rundown test, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE lasted for 20hrs 39mins before battery levels dropped to zero, which is 11% longer when compared against the Galaxy S20’s FHD+ score and a whopping 30% longer than the Note 20 Ultra. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is the most affordable of the S20 range, undercutting the S20 in price. So it's cheap...but is it any good? Realistically, it takes all of the best specs of the rest of the S20 range, only losing out in a few areas. Overall, with top-tier cameras, a high-end display and powerful battery and processor, the S20 FE is more than worth the price you're paying. Should you upgrade to the 5G edition? The main 12MP sensor takes some really great snaps, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as it’s a camera we’ve seen multiple times before and been impressed with on each occasion. Samsung remains the king when it comes to colour-rich, deeply saturated and slightly oversharpened shots and those traits are clear to see here. These images are primed for social media and I can completely understand why they’re so popular.

The FE retains an OLED panel with a small cutout at the top for the front camera, however it tops out at FHD+ rather than WQHD+ like on the Galaxy S20. As you couldn’t combine 120hz and the higher-res anyway, this change seems fine to me. Bokeh Mode, Face Detection, AI Features, Smile Detection, Panorama, Self Timer, Burst Mode, HDR, Slow Motion, Time Lapse, Scene Detection, Automatic Mode Many have complained about the decreased performance and battery skills of the Exynos version vs the Qualcomm so it’s great to see Samsung deciding to give a wider launch to the arguably superior model.Still, the Galaxy S20 FE excels in a few key areas. Pictures taken in daylight are filled with intricate details and they have a little more contrast and less visual noise than the iPhone 11. Likewise, the S20 FE’s 3x zoom camera is an added bonus, since the iPhone 11 only has a dual-camera array, consisting of just a pair of 12MP wide and ultra-wide sensors. However, if you have no real interest in 5G and see it as more of an add-on feature, feel free to skip it. The average person is unlikely going to get much use out of it anyway.
