Alternatively, they could use larger materials. You could swap out the items for something easier to handle. Use lots of water. Dry sand in its natural state is lazy stuff. It wants to lie down and spread out into all sorts of nooks and crannies. The good news is that as long as you keep gravity working for you, there is really no way to add too much water. Which brings us to our second rule. You’ll need at least two types of shovels to get your castle just right: a small shovel and a long-handled shovel. Step 4 Carve and smooth. Using your smoothing tool, smooth and define the elements of your composition. The last step is to add the keystone, which is the last handful of sand you’ll use to construct your arch and will hold the two halves together. Keep digging until you hit water. Don't worry about how wide the hole is – you're aiming for depth, not width. The hole will get wider as you pull wet sand from its depths. Keep in mind that you're digging a well here, not a moat. When the water starts puddling at the bottom of your hole, you can stop digging. If you’re not up for a competition, ask a nearby beach bum to join you (or your child) in building a castle. This is a great way to socialize if you’re solo or teach your little ones how to make new friends. My next tip refers to size. Yes, size matters – at least in the game of sandcastles. The modest castle with perfect towers, battlements and moat is ok, but it is the huge castles which break the beach horizon that inspire awe and wonderment in people that pass by. Think big! Pebbles, shells, driftwood fragments and feathers all enhance a castle. And let’s face it: a castle is about being seen. And although there may be science behind the humble sandcastle, don’t forget to have fun building it. Whenever possible, hold your knife at the same angle at which you are cutting, so that it smooths and shaves the surface. The magic formula
There’re lots of different jobs that need doing when building the sandcastles. There’s a role for everyone, so encourage everyone to be involved in a way that works for them.
