About this deal

If anyone needs help or struggles with fine motor skills, give them the opportunity to work in pairs with another young person, with a young leader or an adult volunteer. Alternatively, they could use larger materials. You could swap out the items for something easier to handle. Use lots of water. Dry sand in its natural state is lazy stuff. It wants to lie down and spread out into all sorts of nooks and crannies. The good news is that as long as you keep gravity working for you, there is really no way to add too much water. Which brings us to our second rule. You’ll need at least two types of shovels to get your castle just right: a small shovel and a long-handled shovel. Step 4 Carve and smooth. Using your smoothing tool, smooth and define the elements of your composition. The last step is to add the keystone, which is the last handful of sand you’ll use to construct your arch and will hold the two halves together. To make your keystone, simply add a handful of sand between the two sides and carefully mold them together until they form a solid piece.

Compact the wet sand to form structures. "Pounding sand into submission" is an intuitive and time-honoured method of strengthening and tightening those bridges that hold the grains together. You can use your hands or feet, or even a tamper, to compact wet sand.

Keep digging until you hit water. Don't worry about how wide the hole is – you're aiming for depth, not width. The hole will get wider as you pull wet sand from its depths. Keep in mind that you're digging a well here, not a moat. When the water starts puddling at the bottom of your hole, you can stop digging. If you’re not up for a competition, ask a nearby beach bum to join you (or your child) in building a castle. This is a great way to socialize if you’re solo or teach your little ones how to make new friends. Get Creative Ask everyone to think about why these building don’t fall down, crumble or lean to one side, with the exception of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but sand castles just fall apart easily. Let a few people answer. If your goal is to achieve any kind of altitude – and it is! – you're going to do some serious digging. If you have the opportunity to bring or buy one object, make it a shovel, ideally a long-handled model with a small scoop. The sand-sculpture task that feels the most like work is digging the hole and mounding up the sand. A little garden spade is better than nothing. Have you thought why your tent pegs sometimes don’t stay in the ground when it’s windy? Using what you’ve learned today, next time you can think if it’s the way you put them in or the ground you put them into.

Large Sandcastle Bucket - The Range

Step 5 Moisten as necessary. The longer you work on your composition, the more your sand sculpture will dry out – you must keep it moist. Where you build your castle will depend on how long you have to create it, how far you want to carry water, and how long you want your structure to stay standing. Sandcastle competitions, big or small, can be a great way to motivate you to step up your skills! Set a timer and get to work. At the end, observe everyone’s sandcastles and even set up a vote with other beachgoers. Make New Friends

Step 3 Scoop up a big double handful of sand, keeping your hands together and pointed towards your stomach.

My next tip refers to size. Yes, size matters – at least in the game of sandcastles. The modest castle with perfect towers, battlements and moat is ok, but it is the huge castles which break the beach horizon that inspire awe and wonderment in people that pass by. Think big! Pebbles, shells, driftwood fragments and feathers all enhance a castle. And let’s face it: a castle is about being seen. And although there may be science behind the humble sandcastle, don’t forget to have fun building it. Whenever possible, hold your knife at the same angle at which you are cutting, so that it smooths and shaves the surface. Now ask everyone why a sand castle at the beach falls apart as it dries or if it’s built with dry sand. Let a few people answer. Step 6 Continue building your second tower, being very careful not to apply too much pressure on the top.

The magic formula

There’re lots of different jobs that need doing when building the sandcastles. There’s a role for everyone, so encourage everyone to be involved in a way that works for them. It’s OK if not everyone wants to share their ideas or talk in front of the group. If people aren’t comfortable sharing with the group, people could get into pairs or small groups to chat about what they’ve learned instead. An offset spatula (flat paddle-like end), pastry knife with an offset handle, and/or a paintbrush for smoothing out large sections of sand The following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. Now, add the same initial weight to each sandcastle. You could keep adding weights until the sandcastle collapses to see which holds the most.
