As with the first Scream 4K release, this disc gives us Scream 2 as it always should have looked and shows how far home video has now come. Hopefully gone are the days of artificially manipulating the image to what studios think audiences want to see and if 4K does nothing else but give us film as it simply looked (or as close to as possible in the digital world) in the cinema, then long may it reign supreme in the home video market. A stellar 4K re-release.

Much of Scream feels like direct remake, and it's supposed to; that the film holds so many connections with the original and the larger costume. The grading may not have that "wow" factor to it, but the faithfulness to the film's intended color timing is very welcome. It's a good, In classic Scream fashion this film is fully self-aware. The first film was self-aware about how Horror films in general work, and this film is details inherent to the original material; faces, clothes, buildings and natural elements around campus, as well as odds and ends inside homes, all judging by that review's screenshots this is a serious improvement in all areas. This is fine in a vacuum, however, with format appropriate clarity to faces, adequate intimacy to skin details and Paramount releases Scream to the UHD with a very strong 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD release. While I did not review, nor have access to, the well defined, and refined 4K image is obvious; fans who have been living on the decade-old Blu-ray will find this to be a very welcome addition toScream 2 was shot on 35mm film using Panavision Panaflex Platinum cameras and Panavision Primo and C-Series lenses, capturing the images anamorphically. This disc uses a new 4K restoration of the film’s original camera negative and creates a wonderful native 3840 x 2160p resolution image with the original aspect ratio of 2.39:1 faithfully preserved using a 10-bit video depth, both High Dynamic Range flavours (HDR10 and Dolby Vision) and encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. The 90s horror classic takes a stab at Ultra HD with an excellent HEVC H.265 encode, giving fans a marked improvement over its somewhat disappointing Blu-ray predecessor, which was hindered by distracting artificial sharpening and very mild compression artifacts. The Dolby Vision color grading brings new life to the image with a natural and eye-catching color grading which is far more exact, nuanced, and bold

Detail is naturally high. The picture is sharp and crisp, revealing excellent details across the board, including basics like faces A small town, a series of brutal murders of the local teenage population and a masked killer. Taken at its most basic, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson conjured up a classic premise that works on that most base of levels. A clinically effective murder mystery, with intrigue about a past evil and sense of how this has affected the whole town, it's tightly plotted and works incredibly well. But layer on top of that, that ironic and meta-understanding of the genre and a superb set of characters that are both timeless stereotypes and beautifully subverted tropes in themselves, and the film bursts into life in a way that a decade of horror films from across the spectrum of horror never really managed and has struggled to recapture since.
