About this deal

So just how much will you have to spend on a powerful vacuum cleaner? Dyson’s range is more expensive than Shark’s, but they are lighter, more compact and as we’ve mentioned loaded with smarts that ensure a thorough clean, which in our eyes makes them worth the extra investment. While we tested the Eco and Boost power modes, we generally used the vacuum in Clean Sense IQ mode as we wanted to get a good feel for how the Clean Sense IQ technology worked. When there was lots of dirt or debris on the floor, the suction was increased automatically and then returned to normal when the area was clean. The suctioning capability of this vacuum was superb, and we never had to run over the same area more than twice. Perhaps the most significant difference in design philosophy between the two brand's offerings is only visible after you've flipped them over. While both may have started with single roller heads, Shark has pushed continuously forward, developing twin roller heads for most of the vacuums on their lineup. The promotional material would tell you that this design is ideal for multi-surface households, with an unpowered soft roller collecting lightweight debris like dust on hard floors and the main roller providing the necessary surface agitation to lift away debris embedded in carpets. Shark has also long-touted the self-cleaning capability of these primary brushrolls, which use plastic fins to capture any long strands of hair before they can foul up the mechanisms. It's a versatile cleaner that can be operated in one of several configurations, depending on what surface you're cleaning. Floors are cleaned easily in the upright vacuum cleaner mode. From here, you can detach the wand, or just the handle for a speedy transition to overhead or above floor cleaning while the vacuum pod remains attached to the floorhead.

Disassembling the vacuum to use it in the powered lift-away mode is really simple, though we’d have preferred if the small tools were stored on board the vacuum for easy access. Nevertheless, the ability to use it in so many different configurations is very convenient. When cleaning floors, the bottom-heavy design means the vacuum feels lightweight and maneuvers well around tight corners. That does mean that it’s bulky at the base, which stops it from reaching very far under low furniture. But by lifting the pod from the wand and holding it one hand, you remove the bulk and in this mode it has excellent reach under low furniture.

With all the controls on the handle, adjusting the suction power or floor type as you vacuum is effortless, however, we did have to keep repositioning our hand for comfort, the handle can be uncomfortable if your grip is too close to the control panel. The main floorhead has two motorized brush rolls that work in tandem to collect dirt. The soft front roll collects fine dust and the PowerFin brushroll which agitates carpets for a deeper clean. And for dull days, headlights on the front of the floorhead illuminate the floor and dirt ahead. While most people comment that “the battery lasts a long time” some would prefer if it was supplied with a second battery. Many people also note the frustration that the tools aren’t stored on the vacuum and some wish it came with a better selection of tools. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: What the experts say The Anti Hair Wrap technology was effective at preventing hairs from becoming tangled in the brush rolls, even after we spread extra hair over the floor to give it a challenge. We also appreciated the headlights on the front of the floorhead, they illuminate dark corners and the areas beneath furniture, making it easier to see what you’re vacuuming. There are three power levels; Eco, Deep Clean, and Boost. These are controlled easily via the controls on the handle and this is also where the vacuum can be switched between carpet and hard floor modes. Additionally, the LCD screen displays the percentage of charge left in the battery so you can see at a glance when it needs a recharge. It's worth noting that both companies deal exclusively in bagless vacuums with pretty robust filtration systems; most of Shark's and Dyson's full-size vacuums boast HEPA filters and allergen-sealed constructions. However, this design isn't the best option if you suffer from allergies. While allergens might be sealed inside the vacuums' dustbins as you clean, shaking out a dustbin to eliminate any accumulated debris can create a plume of dust and dirt, making for a far less hygienic means of debris disposal than tossing out a sealed dirtbag. Conclusion As we previously said, it comes with a range of useful attachments which differ slightly between the US and UK models. The UK model comes with a crevice tool, dusting brush, wide upholstery tool, and motorized pet tool. The US model comes with a crevice tool, pet multi-tool, and an anti-allergen dusting brush. When vacuuming exclusively in boost mode, that battery lasted for just 11.5 minutes, so it’s best to utilize all the suction levels to prolong the battery during use. And though the selection of tools is useful, we’d have preferred if the US model was supplied with the mini motorized pet tool that comes with this vacuum if you buy it in the UK. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Care and maintenance Several replacement parts for the vacuum are available to buy from Shark, enabling you to prolong the life if anything breaks. Furthermore, the lengthy 5-year warranty covers manufacturing faults if you buy it from an authorized retailer. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Price and availabilityThe vacuum itself is amazing for hard floors, and performs above average on rugs, I did have to do multiple passes on the rug to get all the fine hair and debris out, and the duoclean head is jinky and awkward on the carpet edges where it meets the floor.

The washable pre-motor filter needs rinsing monthly, whereas the post-motor HEPA only needs rinsing once a year. Both filters will need replacing after 2.5-3 years of use. All the filters are easy to access for cleaning and replacement. It weighs 6.2kg / 12.4 pounds which is acceptable especially given that it’s bottom-heavy. It also disassembles, so when cleaning high places, the majority of the weight doesn’t need lifting overhead as it can be carried in your other hand. This vacuum's dust collection is decent, and it’s reasonably priced with a lengthy warranty so it’ll suit lots of people. Plus, the removable battery means you don’t need to find a spot next to a power outlet to store it. It won’t win any prizes for sleek looks and streamlined design, though, and emptying the dustbin can be messy. How does the Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum compare to competitors? Having the pod in one hand while cleaning overhead with the other makes it far more comfortable than we’ve experienced with many other cordless vacuums. Though when we used it for very high cleaning, the wand did start to feel heavy after prolonged use. Having said that, you can use it without the wand for areas that are easier to reach. The best corded Shark vacuum we've tested is the Shark APEX Upright. It feels more sturdily built than the Dyson Ball Animal 3, as well as cheaper upright models in Shark's lineup. It also delivers stellar performance on bare floors and does a pretty good job on low and high-pile carpets. However, for raw suction power, it falls short of the Dyson. Its floorhead is more tangle-prone, and unlike the Dyson, it isn't height-adjustable, which would make it easier to clean shaggier carpeting.

Dyson vs Shark: Design Features

Type: Cordless Upright/cannister hybrid, detachable hose and wand effectively make it a cannister vacuum as well The dust cup is easy to remove and with the press of one button the dirt empties out of the bottom into the trash. However, we did find that on more than one occasion we had to manually pull some of the dirt out due to tangled hair which stopped it from falling out on its own, which is somewhat annoying. The filters have to be washed monthly to keep them from getting clogged but it’s an easy job and they last 2.3-3 years before they need to be replaced.

The main vacuum pod becomes portable in what Shark calls "powered lift-away mode". This allows you to carry the pod in one hand while using any combination of the tools, wand, or even the main floorhead. It means that for overhead cleaning, you don't have to hold the bulk of the vacuum above your head while you clean. And when cleaning other surfaces such as sofas, you can rest it on the seat while you vacuum, making it a much easier task. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum: Setup and assembly

We cleaned our floorboards with the duster brush tool, and when we needed to get into tight corners we changed the brush Tool into a crevice tool. The vacuum was light enough to use the crevice tool to clean the corners of our 10-foot ceilings and atop door frames. We were excited to use the Anti-Allergen Dusting Brush on our window blinds as they get very dusty if, however, it didn’t clean the blinds as well as we’d hoped.
