Internal conversations with Sigma insiders reveals that the popularity of Sony’s E mount (and its evolution to the more premium a6xxx series) caught Sigma a little by surprise, and this second wave of lenses (and their more premium nature) makes for a better match with Sony’s own evolution. Having owned and used the 30mm f/1.4 DN lens, I was excited for the release of the new Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary as a reasonably priced, premium wide angle option. If you own Micro 4/3rds or Sony APS-C E-mount, the 16mm DN should be a serious interest to you. Therefore the recent introduction of three F1.4 primes by Sigma is great news for Canon EOS M owners who want to move beyond the capabilities of the zoom lenses that they initially bought with their camera body. The 16mm f/1.4 Contemporary is a crop-sensor lens, sold in both Sony APS-C E-mount and Micro Four Thirds varieties. I was sent the Sony E-mount version and tested it with the Sony A6500, a very capable APS-C mirrorless camera. Let's see how the Sigma handles a variety of shooting situations. In this shot, we can see that there is some rather heavy lens flare from the lamp. This would not be easy to handle during post-processing, so this is something to keep in mind. From my perspective, having Image Stabilization on the lens doesn’t make that much of a difference when shooting video on the M50. Final Thoughts Edge sharpness is also creditable, being very good from f/1.4 to f/2.8, excellent at f/4 and f/5.6 and then very good at f/8 and f/11. Results are softer at the edges at f/16, but can still be described as good. For many, the Sigma 16mm should fill a huge need for filmmakers and photographers looking for a relatively affordable, high-quality, semi wide-angle prime lens for their Canon EF-M cameras. Low-light performance Across much of the frame, the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens is sharp. Sharpness does fall off a bit when you look toward the extreme corners of the frame, but even then, if you are stopped down, sharpness and resolution remains good.

Like the 30mm, it has a close minimum focusing distance. With that wide f/1.4 aperture, it is possible to get an excellent shallow depth of field. Field Test Summary The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens is fast, well-built and a good value I did notice some purple fringing in certain high contrast scenes at wide apertures. The nature of this is covered in the resolution section above. It is essentially only an issue at f/1.4. The lens can focus to just under 10 inches (25 centimeters), which provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:9.9. This is clearly not a lens well-suited for macro photography. However, this close focus distance is sufficient if you want to utilize close foreground elements in landscape images or capture close-up portraits.

The lens hood cuts harmful rays that can negatively affect photographs while also minimizing reflectivity within the hood itself. The hood also features a rubber construction and a non-slip groove to make it easy to hold in a variety of shooting situations. Focusing is down to 0.25m, or 0.82 feet. This gives a maximum magnification of 1:9.9, which is about what would be expected of a traditional 35mm or so wide standard lens.
