I adore the colour palette of this book: dusky pinks, terracotta reds and sandy yellows. The naïve, angular illustrations are full of character and the text has an attractively simple style. Expect children to regularly look up with gleeful exclamations of ‘Hey, did you know…?’ Read our review of Mummies Unwrapped Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Kathy Allen (Raintree)

I would like to thank #SamanthaKing, #NetGalley and #LittleBrownBookGroupUK for an ARC of #TheSleepover in exchange for an honest review. First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Boldwood Books and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Daisy's sister Lily is non-verbal but she's learned Makaton at her new special school. She signs to Daisy that she wants a sleepover. Will family and friends somehow make Lily's party THE BEST SLEEPOVER IN THE WORLD? Questions arise and fingers are pointed as we are thrown different scenarios and red herrings to throw us off the scent as Izzy searches for the truth about what happened to her son. As the reader, we suspect just about everyone along the way as the story threw us twist after twist! The Ancient Egypt Sleepover and author Stephen Davies Fiction The Ancient Egypt Sleepover by Stephen Davies (Caboodle Press)

This is my second book by the author, and already on my favorite author list. I am enjoying these newfound UK authors who definitely know how to create mind-bending twisty psychological thrillers. What is clear throughout this is not only do the adults have secrets but the children do as well, and maybe what the children are hiding is much worse. I did enjoy discovering the many secrets in this read and King does throw in a couple of good red herrings to throw the reader off the scent a bit but I wanted something else. I know these type of books are showing someone at the worst time in their lives but I really struggled with the characters in this one. The Best Sleepover in the World - Penguin Books UK

The characters don't develop very well, either. The story is told very well, and had enough interesting twists to keep me reading, but I found the characters one-dimensional.Eileen was a mother and befriends the teens, often inviting them over to her remote farmhouse, providing them with food, drinks, fun at the pond, and friendship making them feel like adults, and they loved going there. Also, her son Bill was good-looking and popular, and they looked forward to their visits. This was an enjoyable book which kept me guessing. I wanted to know what happened to the Hixton five? I wanted to know who was behind everything. There are some twists and turns along the way. Some readers may have an inkling for, others I did not see coming.

with THE SLEEPOVER —A dark and spine-chilling psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat with one eye open, afraid of what will happen next. The Sleepover' is a chilling, unnerving read about a nightmarish situation. Sadly, the built up energy went nowhere and I was left disappointed. Aside from her fears concerning her sister's disability, Daisy also feels as though she does not fit into her circle of friends completely as she is the only one who does not have a best friend within the group, and on top of that, the bossiest girl in the group, Chloe, is determined to turn the girls against Daisy. This charming picture book quest is loosely inspired by Egyptian mythology. The best bits are the full spread action sequences, which show dear little Marcy leaping between colossal statues, creeping through a labyrinthine solar boat and descending into the belly of a sphinx. Joe Todd-Stanton is a wonderful colourist. This book contains disturbing content: sexual abuse of a minor, physical abuse of minors, psychological abuse of minors, death of minors, physical abuse & torment of an adult woman, murder, attempted murder and suicide of adult women**The premise had me hooked and I knew I needed to read it. It was a pretty good book, it kept me hooked trying to figure out what happened. A moving look at friendship, sleepovers and siblings from the much loved, bestselling Jacqueline Wilson. Read more Look Inside Details PS : - Bullies are a true pain in the ass. But they will be defeated in the end, no matter how much they boss around you😁🤭 So just keep Calm & wait😉 I returned from Cairo to London obsessed with all things ancient and Egyptian. I learned to read hieroglyphs and began to haunt the British Museum like a very tall, notebook-wielding spectre. I discovered that the museum occasionally hosts sleepovers in its Ancient Egyptian sculpture gallery, a thrilling opportunity for children and an absolute gift to an author of adventure fiction. Daisy The main character of the story and a very nice girl who is quite new to the school and likes art. She creates "The Alphabet Girls" for the girls. She is also protective of her disabled sister Lily.

The Hixton Five. There were actually six of them that summer, the Americans having moved to the village after Christmas. The five girls that were friends allowed a boy into their fold, making six of them until he was gone, leaving five. Izzy struggles with her son's burgeoning independence. She wants to keep him her little boy forever, and wants to protect him from all the people that may hurt him. She's a little one-dimensional in this regard. This story is narrated by Daisy, she has a group of friends Amy, Bella, Chole & Emily. Amy & Bella are best friends, Chole & Emily are best friends, & daisy really likes Emily & wishes to be her best friend. All girls are good mannered except Chole & Chole hurts Daisy alot. When they start having sleepovers for each other's birthday party, chole makes it hard for Daisy, who howsoever never complains about Chole & is greatful that she got invited to the sleepovers. Liam Quinn, a reporter, wants to write a book about Mrs. W (as Eileen was known), and is interested in the viewpoints of the girls. Hannah, although skeptical is starting to think it may be therapeutic. But now things are happening, and she's just scared, and she is sure that Liam is keeping a secret. Everything changed that summer twenty years ago. From past to present, the monster had said that as children, no one would believe them. She was wrong. The monster had been taken way to prison. Now she was getting out. The monster was being freed, and they knew she or her son, Bill, would come after them for revenge—they were responsible for putting her behind bars.Chloe tries to not invite Daisy to her sleepover party by falsely claiming "her Mum won't let her have four invites", but Emily, Amy and Bella refuse to come unless Daisy comes too, causing an argument between them. In the end Chloe gives in and lets Daisy come. At Chloe's party they make pizzas but Chloe sabotages Daisy's pizza by covering it with anchovies which Daisy hates - she then says that they'll make sure Daisy's piece of birthday cake has a special anchovy filling when it comes to cake time, which causes Daisy to decline to eat any. They then watch very scary horror movies which causes Daisy to stay awake all night in fear. This book is told in first person present tense. It's a weird type of writing; one I can't really get past. I was taught in school not to write this way, so when I find a book that is, I find myself yelling in my head at the writing. I also ran across a couple proofreading errors, but they didn't really detract from the story. This would make for a great movie, especially the scenes in the cellar and barn. I would definitely keep my eyes closed in some parts. Cannot wait to see what comes next from this author. Hannah is worried and anxious about having to return to Hixton for her parent's upcoming anniversary. Her mom wants her to stay over, and the idea haunts her. The past is resurfacing.
