About this deal

The waterproof IPX 4 rating will withstand rain splashes, although this is the minimum rating we’d recommend for wet-weather riding. There’s an ambient light sensor that puts the light in standby mode during the day so you don’t burn through the battery while it’s still light, and you can choose to vary output continuously rather than via the eight set modes. StVZO bike lights conform to German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, with beam patterns shaped to avoid dazzling other road users. The head unit has a single power button/mode selector that changes colour to indicate which of its six settings it’s in. Since I only have one bike and I rarely ride on the road, I found myself reaching more consistently for the Countdown 1600.

ALLTY 2000 | road.cc Review: Magicshine ALLTY 2000 | road.cc

In this review, we’ll look at two different kinds of lights: all-in-one options that contain battery and light head in one package, and battery pack options where light head and power source are separate. As LEDs and batteries get more efficient, torch-style lights are increasingly dominating even at the high-lumen end of the market, and the ALLTY 2000 is one such beast. It’s important to choose a light that is bright enough to keep you safe, but not so bright that it will blind other road users. This makes it suitable for riding pretty much all trail centre-type routes and gentler singletrack too. Modern batteries have made this a bit more economical because you can now charge the batteries of many quality bike lights. The Mk17 Race sits at the bottom of Exposure’s bike headlight range, but it’s still an excellent light from the British brand.

The light includes a display of which of the eight modes is in operation and the remaining run time, as well as whether a high or low beam is in use. That being said, if you check out the beam pattern picture you can tell that my messy cables are still a little bit in the way of it (and most of the other lights).

Operation is simple using the wireless remote, and its three-hour burn time on max power is impressive. On paper, Topeak’s Redlite Aero 1W is nothing remarkable, but it’s always the one that’s ready to go and has never failed us out on a ride. The light has 24 modes in total including 12 constant modes that range from 50 lumens with a 75-hour claimed run time to the top-whack 2,000-lumen boost mode.

Moon Meteor Storm Pro front light review - BikeRadar

We set a lower limit of 1,500 claimed lumens when testing mountain bike lights, which is more than ample to provide safe and well-lit shredding. The Ravemen PR1600 (same RRP) is just as bright and runs for longer, and also includes a wireless remote. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lumen rating of a bike light is the only thing that matters, though. But thanks to this feature, you can bring along an extra battery on longer rides, or swap out as needed during one of those supposedly-fun, overnight endurance events. You can get away with less, but if you ride fast or on technical trails more lumens is better than less.

Bontrager’s Ion Pro RT strikes an excellent balance between a high lumen output and a consistent, pleasingly coloured and well-focused beam pattern. It even has a USB port to allow you to use it as a battery pack to charge other gadgets (such as your phone, for example). The light will run for three hours, 30 minutes on full-whack and its switch indicates the charge level.

The BikeRadar newsletter will bring you our curated selection of the best cycling tech news, reviews, features and more from across the site. For gravel riding, it’s unlikely you’ll need the same amount of power as a mountain bike light because you’ll only really need to light the path in front of you rather than twisting and turning trails.
