There are no buzz-worthy modes in Filmmaker Mode or Dolby Vision IQ either, so if you’re not concerned by any of those features here’s what the U8Q has to offer.SDR viewing in a well-lit room is good out of the box on the Hisense U8QF with excellent dynamics and a nice depth to the sharp and detailed image. Whites are clean and bright, fine detail is excellent – spot all the nicks and scratches on the Gipsy Danger jaeger – and the bright and vibrant palette of the film is well handled. HDR viewing is impressive in a well-lit room with good dynamics and no visible issues with black crush for the most part. Hisense has announced its latest TV offering for 2022, and this guide breaks down the updates to its Mini-LED, OLED and Laser series. There is a groove down the rear of the panel which accommodates cable management, routing cables from both sides of the rear panel down to the stand.

Despite achieving some success last year, the Chinese manufacturer has opted to ditch OLED for 2020, but claims its cheaper ULED technology is more than a match, particularly when it comes to contrast. Overriding the TV’s own motion and picture processing, Filmmaker Mode presents the correct aspect ratio, colour and frame rate – just as the filmmakers intended. Hisense says the U8Q features 132 zones, and with a refresh rate of 120Hz, it in theory should produce smoother images with less flicker or stutter.Mine is in a corner and the sound of talking is suppressed somewhat so you need to increase the volume.

Somewhere between the upscaling and the lack of native detail, the two factors balance out to make the picture easier on the eye.Based on the power usage when being viewed and in standby and the presence and effectiveness of power-saving features such as a light sensor or radio screen blanking. Plus, the gamut coverage doesn’t quite cover the full DCI-P3 gamut but we didn’t notice any obvious colour issues within HDR content we viewed. There’s a bit of noise around faces, noticeably with wrinkles, and while it’s not the sharpest, it is a satisfactory looking image. After a dabble with OLED displays, Hisense has gone back to promoting its ULED technology as its main draw, with the U8Q sitting at the top of the 2020 TV tree.

SDR content from everyday TV viewing is also very good with a fairly accurate image out of the box with very nice looking colours and no obvious issues. Hisense says the set’s Quantum Dot Colour technology covers a wide spectrum of colours – a billion – for subtle shades and more realistic tones. The use of any portion of the Smart Services is restricted solely to personal use and no other uses are permitted. It doesn’t have a native 10-bit panel commonly used for HDR, instead employing 8-bit + FRC– a form of dithering that cycles between different colours with each new frame to match the colour range of a 10-bit panel – and results are pretty good.
