About this deal

AMD also includes two core complexes (CCXs) inside of each of these chips that hold the actual CPU cores and the cores' associated cache.

And it has to limit the clock speed of that chiplet, too, as it's even more important that it's the same height as a standard Ryzen 7000-series CPU. Underneath the integrated heat spreader (IHS), the Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7950X3D are very similar. Skill DDR5-6000C30 (F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5N) with AMD EXPO™; ALL SYSTEMS configured with NXZT Kraken X63, open air test bench, GeForce 4090, Windows® 11, PCIe® Resizable Base Address Register (“ReBAR”) ON, Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) OFF. Though the increase in cache size can be beneficial, it doesn’t help with all kinds of computing tasks, and it does come with some drawbacks. In short, this makes the Ryzen 9 7950X3D not particularly competitive against any of Intel’s competing processors either. With the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, AMD's first "Zen 4"-architecture processor to feature its 3D V-Cache technology, this effort has been successful only in some situations. Memory cache is a relatively densely packed piece of silicon, with as many transistors packed in together as possible.

AMD touts the Ryzen 9 7950X3D as a superior gaming processor, and it does show some modest frame-rate advantages at lower resolutions in some games, but it's no slam-dunk across all titles. These are the earliest supported versions, so if you are using a version that predates these, you'll need to update. It also does not hurt performance, so I've never bothered to remove it from Windows myself prior to X3D. This is the only problematic game I've discovered in my testing, everything else works fine for me including CS:GO. This is also used for all of the gaming tests—except those focused on testing the integrated graphics processor, or IGP.However, depending on the GPU and in game settings used (heavy RT) in some scenarios the 7950X3D will be faster due to the extra cores. On the surface, the 7950X3D appears to merely be a Ryzen 9 7950X with an extra L3 cache chiplet and additional silicon and software tuning. Going off these numbers alone, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the 7950X3D is on the ropes, but the entire picture changes when moving off the straight synthetic tests into creative and gaming performance. Starting with the Ryzen 7000 series, AMD began adding low-power IGPs to all of its Ryzen desktop processors.

Editors' Note, March 2, 2023: Some scrutiny by Tom's Hardware scrutiny by Tom's Hardware and online commenters pointed out that our integrated graphics (IGP) testing numbers for the earlier Ryzen 9 7950X chip were unnaturally low; this was likely due to early-driver issues that only became evident with this review of the 7950X3D, and made the 7950X3D's IGP look like a leap forward by comparison. We traditionally test at this lower resolution for our CPU game benchmarking so we are able to highlight the difference in performance down to the actual processors. So, it's important to understand that it is not the only element that matters for your gaming performance, and for a lot of gamers, it might not even be the most important one.WIth CPU sets I recommend setting up some rules under Options > CPU > CPU Sets inside Project Lasso. This particular CCX features an altered design that includes a separate chip with 64MB of L3 cache stacked on top of it. AMD also says that using two V-Cache chiplets doesn’t provide enough performance uplift to justify the extra costs.
