Only a couple are named in the text, such as starlings - one thing that I would have loved to see is a key at the back naming all of the birds, but that's minor. I wish I had filmed my son's reaction to the story, the verbs used to explain the actions of each bird had my son acting out each bird much to all of our delight. Similar to her earlier book, Hooray for Fish, Hooray for Birds shows many different types of birds doing different things and invites participation with its large, colorful illustrations. Each page is filled with bold colours and birds that are very recognisable and themselves have bold outlines and colourings. For a subversive pre-Easter treat, Elys Dolan’s Mr Bunny’s Chocolate Factory (Oxford) is a splendid, Roald Dahl-esque introduction to capitalism, protest and working conditions.

With a wealth of detail, some well-deserved comeuppance and a harassed quality-control unicorn, it will leave readers of all ages smirking. This is such a fun book and an excellent one for getting kids moving about and having some fun as well as just reading. To complement the theme of the book, we spent the rest of the hour doing some fun bird themed activities. punchy text with bird actions that invite the readers to wiggle and stretch along, combined with Lucy Cousins' bright, cheery illustrations make for a winning storytime share. A bouncy read-aloud book to be enjoyed; beautifully illustrated with bold, bright colours and packed with all sorts of wild and wonderful birds.

Definitely recommended for a fun, silly read with some pretty birds and hilarious noises to impress your children with. A bouncy read-aloud book, beautifully illustrated with bold, bright colours and packed with all sorts of wild and wonderful birds!

However, the story ends on a more relaxing note, making it a possible contender for the bedtime routine. More scaly wings are beating in Stephanie Burgis’s The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart (Bloomsbury), the appealing tale of Aventurine, a discontented young dragon still to find her vocation.Circle time is a fun way to bring out some popular rhymes, new rhymes and new twists to old favorites. Finally, DJ and presenter Gemma Cairney’s Open – A Toolkit for How Messed Up and Magic Life Can Be (Macmillan) is a chunky non-fiction splurge of glitter, anecdote and jubilation. There’s no real story to the book but just various different things birds do during one day from morning until night. Usually when authors do another version of a previously loved book I hardly ever like the second version as much. The illustrations are all full bleeds and every page features a different bird with various bright colors that leap off the glossy paper.
