Reading it is almost like reading Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, but for two-year olds—full of pictures and rhymes and a little cat to find on every page that will delight the curious toddler and parents alike. The alphabet format makes zero sense on some pages for example using a word that begins with “J” on the “H” page. Authors including Naomi Klein, Opal Palmer Adisa, and Winona LaDuke have all reacted positively and other reviewers, like Yes! The book won a Caldecott medal and the character is still beloved (in 2017 the US postal service issued a series of Snowy Day stamps).

We teach at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES), which is a federally funded school serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from birth to 8th grade. I'm so left wing that it hurts sometimes, but I found this book very uncomfortable to read because it is so preachy. I’m so disappointed because I’d seen this book on someone’s (real) shelves and jumped to reserve it at the library to see if I’d want this for giving new baby gifts.
