Her first novel Watermelon was published in Ireland in 1995, where it was an immediate, runaway success. So when I saw this book was about Anna-the younger, perpetually zoned (and possibly stoned) type 2 sister (small, dark and pretty) I was a little shocked to see that she had a job as a PR girl for a makeup line in New York. She has the "Best Job in the World" as a PR exec for a top-selling urban beauty brand, a lovely apartment in New York, and a perfect husband -- the love of her life, Aidan Maddox.

I liked Rachel's Holiday when I read it years ago (Watermelon is about the only one I haven't read) and the family were fine as background characters but I don't find them very funny. Couldn't bear to ask an old best friend if she'd ever forgiven you for absconding with her boyfriend? At an event at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August 2020, Keyes rejected the term chick lit as dismissive and sexist, as men writing similar fiction are not described as "dick lit".I suspect Mum and Helen live in a fantasy world where they think someone’s going to come along and turn their lives into a massively successful TV series. But why would she move out, she often asks, when she’s got a rent-free gig, cable telly, and a built-in chauffeur (Dad). I would find it terribly depressing but she says it doesn’t bother her because she’s always known that men were total scumbags. With deep cuts and bandages on her face, fingers without nails, an arm cast and a limp, Anna has never looked less stylish (except when she wore all those hippie skirts). Wrapped in bandages, she cannot even begin to comprehend how she has ended up here, in her parents' Good Front Room.

Keyes developed a drinking problem, and after a failed suicide attempt, entered a rehabilitation program. Then in “Rachel’s Holiday” we see her decide to stop the drug use after seeing what Rachel has gone through with her own drug addiction and by the end of “Angels” she’s come out of the other side of her slightly toxic relationship with Shane and found gainful employment doing office work for Garv’s company. This is another installment in the Walsh family saga and it deals with Anna, the second youngest of the sisters.During her appearance on the show, Keyes also told host Kirsty Young that in spite of all her efforts to treat her depression, including CBT, medication, mindfulness, hospitalisation and diets, what finally healed her was time: "It was an illness and it ran its course.
