One of them, I wrote about last November in the form of a lovely little scotch whisky advent calendar from a U. Definitely nutty on the finish, though my mention of almond notes 10 years prior is less distinct today, perhaps owing to the healthy slug of sweet honey that gives the whisky its exuberance. Apart from ending up in the Lochranza and Robert Burns blends, all whisky is bottled as a single malt. The palate is quite a bit sharper than expected, and had I not known otherwise I would have guessed there was a touch of sherry influence in this bottling due to the rush of citrus peel and a lingering lemon character. Maybe a few more years will round out the flavour better, integrating the bitter, sweet, and salty notes. I was a first year undergrad on a geology field trip to Arran and one of the excursions took us past the Lochranza distillery, but it must have been newly opened at the time as it was quite a few years ago. The Arran distillery—its products were previously labled as “The Arran Malt” until they were redesigned in 2019—is a unique little company located on the Isle of Arran, in Scotland’s Firth of Clyde. The Isle of Arran falls into the small bay between the Campbeltown peninsula (itself a classic scotch whisky region ) and the Lowlands scotch whisky region, but belongs to neither.At the time, I wrote some capsule reviews of various tiny bottles I’d sampled from the calendar, but in truth, I still have a handful of those little 50 ml samples left.
