In the 14 th century the Black Death hit the town and led to a dip in the population (the burial ground for which remains behind Brenchley Gardens). However, when police went to investigate, they could not find any evidence that an accident ever occurred. He went on to tell the local police that he had suddenly been struck by a fearful sense of evil and that shortly after this, a pair of enormous, hairy hands grabbed the steering wheel of his vehicle, causing him to crash. It is believed that her ghost is the one that haunts that stretch of road where she spent her final moments. As well as the reports of the ghost jumping in front of cars, there have also been four reported experiences of a female hitch-hiker on Bluebell Hill.
