Description

A second murder raises the stakes, particularly when the murders appear to replicate murders in the books the club has been reading. Tense and evocative with a compelling mystery at its heart, and peppered with his trademark humour, this is Gorevan at his very best as he delivers a corker that will have you turning the pages until you've devoured every last word and uncovered every last secret.

Fingers begin pointing toward another of the club members, so over Marc's objections, Charlie's valuable insights translate to her acceptance on the investigative team. Toni did like to be centre of attention and was not shy in putting the other members in their place with a look or an acidic retort.

One of the things I found refreshing about her and this book is that Charley did not take unnecessary chances and instead of going behind law enforcement's back, she worked with them side by side.

There's some language and also a relationship developing in here that I don't often find in those types of stories but for me I found I rather enjoyed this one being a bit of a mix of both types of books. At once voicy, witty, and lively, The Book Club Murderswill keep you turning pages, a compelling read. In the week leading up to 19 December, it sold 134,514 copies, making it the first debut novel ever to be Christmas number one. Could there really be a serial killer on the loose – something that second in command DI Palmer seems particularly keen on proving? In a charming cozy mystery series debut, Leslie Nagel’s irrepressible small-town heroine finds that her fellow mystery book club members may be taking their Agatha Christie a bit too literally—and murder a bit too lightly. The only thing that kept it from being a 5 star read was the how much the ploce department let a civilian get involved in solving the crime. It did have certain OTT elements, but those were quite limited, and such farfetched situations are anyway part and parcel of this genre nowadays.

Shirley considers her husband Grant useless, as he doesn’t provide enough, spends lots of time with his friends at the pub and spoils their daughter. While I loved the way the complications associated with such a coming-out were incorporated in the plot, I also feel like the transition was (mostly) portrayed in too idealistic a way.

If you also love the idea of murder among the book club members, then The Book Club Murders is the book for you. I felt bad for her situation and the need to run, but was pleased she had the lucky chance to escape away to an inherited home, or so I thought.
